If in the last year, approximately 10 students got 90+ in the ATAR for our school, and another 15/20 got 80+, could one assume that if they're in the top 10 ranks of those similar subjects (that the students who got 80+), they'd get greater than 80 in the ATAR. Since the students who received 85-86 were in similar ranks to me, always being in the top 10 of the same subjects I'm doing. Does that give me a reasonable estimation on my ATAR as well? Furthermore, according to teachers our cohort is smarter than the previous years in regards of averages and that we're doing better than they were. So, am I being hopeful or am I correct?

tl;dr:

If students who got 80+ were in slightly lower ranks than me, and those with 85-86 are in the same ranks as me (top 10 for all subjects), does that mean I'm also looking at an 85/86?

Err... somewhat.

What's your school rank?

Because if it's like... over 300, then things can vary wildly. For example, the highest academic achiever at my school in 2009 got an ATAR of 80-something, I'd wager. But then in my cohort in 2010, we had 2 95+ ATARs and one very close to 90. And then in 2011, I don't believe anyone got over 90.

So, really - it's sort of an unknown. However if your teachers think your cohort is overall smarter, then you might actually outperform last year's cohort.

It's really an iffy thing. However, if you go to the ATAR Arcana and post your school rank, and the ranks you are at with each subject - the ATAR estimators here can give you an indication of where you may be at.

I've been told I'm looking at around 80-84/85. Thing is, I seem to be doing extremely well in comparison to last years mid-top 80s, so I'm quite surprised.

I don't think the school rank is about 300.

Our rank was 126 for top hsc achievers (HSC All-Rounders).
School was ranked 84th for HSC 2011 English & Math in Catholic schools.

We also (every year) consistently receive around 6/7+ students in the 90s, and many in the 80s.

You're most likely in the mid 80's at this rate, judging from the figures you listed. But it would be quite hard comparing yourself to the year before and previous, you should just focus on yourself and this year's cohort because that's what really matters at this rate.

My suggestion is that you get your physics, SOR and English Advanced rank much higher because those may bring your ATAR down at this rate. If you could push everything to the top 5 by trials or so, I can gurantee your ATAR would be placed in the high 80's to low 90's.

I really want to be in the mid 80s so I'm happy with that, but definitely wanna push myself up. And yeah, you're definitely right about focusing on what's happening now.

I've been improving significantly in SOR and am hoping for an 85 in the trials to get myself 6th or 7th. English Advanced is hard to move up in, we're all so tight. 9th place is at an average of about 84%, with the highest at 95-65%. Physics is similar. Top 7 in the class have an average of 84-85%+. I'm just glad to be hitting 70%. Last year no one achieved below high band 4, so I'm happy just by getting 84/85 in the HSC, but whatever. I definitely need to use the trials to push my averages up and my ranks, so thank you.
