I think anything longer than a sentence or typed line is pushing it. Even in university level textual criticism, I rarely go over this limit.

Most people tend to over quote. Teachers say to back up your statements with quotes, and to be honest, the more you quote the less you have to write.

To give the best response though, you should only quote what's vital to your techniques meaning. Most surrounding context can be paraphrased.

i was just writing notes for mysteries of udolpho and i realised the quotes were very excessive, so i'll look into cutting them down tomorrow.

Definitely 1 sentence. My teacher gave me a 22/25 marked down from 23.5/25 because my quotes were too long.
