Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

Might be a wise idea if people suggest the best books for each subject, I will then edit my first post, so people can easily see it. How does that sound?

Go back through all the post and tally the number of times each book has been mentioned as good??

Or have separate threads for each subject eg best chem books, best phys books??

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

A study guide should be a supplement to your own notes...so if you dont ahve much on a certain topic or want a more generalised definition then theyre really helpful there. But its stupid to rely on them entirely or to buy them and take them to every lesson, like ive seen some people do. i used my excel guide for sor2 last year when i was doing my study for the trial and the hsc exam, but not at other times

english textbooks are usually a let down.. eg excel or get smart. but most of the study guides are quite useful and they can be easily obtained from the library.

excel books in other subjects are quite handy and contain useful info.

I generally find York notes are pretty good for english...better than those get smarts or whatever random stuff there are. But only use them limitedly.

They are after all, notes, and only notes!

Honestly, I think you should try and wait til the school supplies you with a textbook so you would then know the books that you dont need to buy.

Be sad if you have two copies of the same textbook ;)[/Kujah]

BAH! So true. I brought an economics and businesses studies text book and i received them at school...

bit of a bump and a nudge.

look at the buy/sell forums to look for bargains.

most people are willing to negotiate (like me!)

so float around there, might find something interesting.

that's my 2 cents.

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

Ive just got the Preliminary Dotpoints Chemistry ... its really good as its full of questions in the dot points of the syllabis...it's practically like practicing the whole syllabis with provided questions.

I'm finding it really good and definitely gaining ALOT of benefit from it!

They're pretty good, my Chem teacher gives us each set when we start each module.

I bought the Cambridge Ext Maths study guide the other day - its pretty good, but its only the extension work, and its not as in-depth as you would need for a Extension topic test, its more of a HSC year re-hashing kinda book.
But, it has worked solutions for every question (which is nice, of course)

Dot Point's good for questions based on the syllabus, and gives concise notes at the answer pages of the book. You can get them at any leading bookstore by the way.

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

Hmm, so how would excel revision guides compare with the macquarie ones for biology and chemistry? Of course, i dont intend to study completely out of them, but i find that the excel one i have for chemistry helps me when my core text book has me confused =)

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

accelerated maths is okay, but i find it doesn't go so in depth. Its just quite simple and easy. I personally LOVE surfing as its all my teacher ever gives us. But I do all the questions and I understand the work quite a bit as well which is good. Dot Point for me is like meh. I can't be bothered doing them for some reason. I'm just so lazy when it comes to Dot Point.

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides?

I look at the questions in Dot Point and use the answers at the back as a "guide" to make my own one :p
