Anyone know any good related texts to accompany the crucible? (preferably not 'The Scarlet Letter' as many people are already doing that)

Howl by Allen Ginsberg is my number one recommendation:
(just search it up to find it, it's free to access and everything)

- it's a poem so finding quotes and techniques are super easy
- it's written at almost the same time critiquing the same failing social structure
- it made me cry.... so you know

(it might be hard to understand for some people but because it's such a well recognised poem there are lots of resources to draw from in understanding it including this line by line analysis that also identifies context, themes and all that good stuff: search: Owlcation Analysis of Poem Howl by Allen Ginsberg Andrew Spacey)

This poem made me fall in love with poetry aaannnndddd get 24/25 on my English Adv multimodal.

Do you mind sharing your assignment/notes? It'd be great to get an understanding of the text. Also how did you effectively analyse it both texts and create a quality multimodal?

HI, Im looking for a good related text for the crucible for HSC. I was thinking between animal farm by George Orwell or The dressmaker
In addition to Animal Farm and The Dressmaker, there is a range of texts that could form related material which you may wish to consider as part of your studies of the Common Module. They include:
  • Ozymandias - a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley.
  • Caged Bird - a poem by Maya Angelou.
  • The Scarlet Letter - a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
  • House of Cards - TV series (media) by Beau Willimon.
  • Nose Dive - an episode from the television series Black Mirror, by Joe Wright.
  • The Lives of Others - a film by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.
  • V for Vendetta - a graphic novel by Alan Moore
  • Fahrenheit 451 - a novel by Ray Bradbury
  • Jasper Jones - a novel by Craig Silvey
  • To Kill a Mockingbird - a novel by Harper Lee
  • Heart of Darkness - a novella by Joseph Conrad
  • The Handmaid's Tale - a novel by Margaret Atwood
  • The Wave - a novel by Todd Strasser (Morton Rhue), one of my favourite English books!
  • The Catcher in the Rye - a novel by J. D. Salinger
  • The Year of Living Dangerously - a novel by Christopher Koch
  • The Bell Jar - a novel by Sylvia Plath
  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - a novel by Mark Twain
I hope this helps! 😄

hi thank you!!! But out of the dress maker and animal farm, which ones would be better?
I believe that determining the better option would require gaining an understanding of what each text is about:
  • The Crucible tells the story of a village that becomes embroiled in a witch hunt. The people of Salem live in a constant state of fear as more and more people are accused of witchcraft.
  • Animal Farm tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.
  • In The Dressmaker, a dressmaker (Kate Winslet) is accused of murder when she was a child. She returns to her small Australian town to seek revenge on the locals who did her wrong.
By looking at these brief summaries, one can establish that Animal Farm would probably be the better option. The Dressmaker does not appear to be as close to The Crucible as Animal Farm is to The Crucible.

A more informed decision can be made by considering the main themes of each text. Here, we can further notice the connection between The Crucible and Animal Farm as both texts demonstrate ordinary people's lack of power, hence the significance of the concept of power in both texts.

If possible can you please share your notes on Howl, I want to understand what you think some of the connections are between this and the Crucible. I have looked online to understand the poem, but analysing them together is difficult for me.

Hi, I know this a little late, but I was wondering if you had any notes related to Howl. I just read it and I think I've fell in love, but even though it's clearly understandable, I need a little help digesting it. What people have said before like I can draw like abstract connections, but I need help finding clear links between it and the crucible
