What are the good ones? Well I have heard that USyd colleges are better in a way to UNSW colelges in the social and sporting aspects of it.

What are the best ones? I have heard that Warrane is the qorst out of the bunch with all boys, Opus Dei, no life, no women and a lot more...

But which ones are the really good ones? Any insider tips/advice/info?

For the post started Warrane is catholic, all boys and run by opus dei.

The only colleges I've been inside are NEW and Baxter. Both are nice. New is a little bit more spiffy.

Well ive just heard that Warrane is really weird

New is supposed to be very nice and good but is there that closeness like the Usyd colleges i hear so much about?

I really dont think sydney colleges would be any better than unsw colleges - i live in one of the kensington colleges and theyre all very big socially and in terms of sport (theres inter-college competitions for just about every sport you can imagine). Anyway everything that can be said about the colleges has been said in other threads so you could just search for them...

oh really? thanks for that, didnt know that, like the sport stuff. Its not just petty sport like touch footy etc.. is it? Does unsw have something like the Rawson cup that Usyd has? It seems like a really good experience and everything.

are the colleges like communities where everyone just socialises? (that would be awesome).

Nope its not just stuff like touch... the biggest sports are probably hockey, rugby soccer, and a couple of others but theres a lot of smaller competitions like afl, water polo, tennis, etc. And I'm not sure what the Rawson cup is, but unsw has the "sports shield" where colleges are given points based on how well they do in various sports (with more weighting given to the larger ones) with a winner at the end. And yep, thats pretty much what a college is

My understanding is that the Rawson is the Usyd equivalent of the sports shield.

And in regard to the original question, I live at UNSW and I wouldn't say the colleges at UNSW aren't as good as USyd. Sure, they aren't as old and well established, but that doesn't mean the social life, etc. is missing.

damn, im really torn between the two...

like parties yeah u get them at both but its all about the atmosphere. I atill have absolutely no idea of which to choose....i think its more of a question - which is the better uni?

in terms of education, it depends on what degree you want to do...

Well i want to do com/law and i know both unis are very good with regards to their academic reputation.

And i stress again i use "better" very loosely.

UNSW Law and USyd Law take different approaches, so it's hard to compare them in terms of quality.

so what about Goldstein and Basser? how are they?

goldstein is small, only around 70 people but as you may imagine everyone there is very close and its size promotes a very community orientated living style. Basser is bigger but still very fun - basser is only better I reckon cause of the basins in every room i reckon

Basser is good because all the rooms are around 2 courtyards so there is a lot of natural light. It's also a good size -not too small and not too big. And yes, it's good to have a basin in your room.

Warrane College

Hmm,

I go to warrane college, I think its pretty good actually (apart from the fact there are no girls). I applied pretty late for unsw accommodation, it was the only place with rooms still available. I was dreading to come to Warrane, but it has exceeded my expectations by far. We won sports shield again this year, that makes two in a row. The rooms are pretty good at warrane, modern space efficent rooms, and the college is formatted well (Promotes community feeling). It is probably also one of the more cheaper colleges. It's definitely worth considering, if ur a guy.

How late did you apply?

And will doing an Arts degree or a Social Science degree affect one's consideration for college?

Yes, how late did you apply? I applied a few days ago, but to only one college (New College). Should I maybe apply to a few more?

Pretty late, just after UAI's were released. But i know ppl who applied around this time and still didn't get places at the Kensos, however, you should still be able to get Shalom (if you have the money) and New College (if you have any scholarships). International House doesnt usually take first years.

I don't think degree really matters, i guess if you were a arts student and you enjoying partyin all the time, shalom wouldnt be the place to go. New College is good, although its dry, there are so many ppl, ull be sure to find someone you like. Plenty of arts students at warrane, prob all the lazy ppl like me who applied late (Btw: I'm not a arts student). Warrane has stuff like coffee club each night (where the floor gets together to chat for an hr or so), some of the philosphical debates go on till 4 am (usually started by arts students, lol).

Anyway sometimes its better to be a minority degree in college (I'm the only first year student doing actuarial studies), it's good to take your mind off your own degree.

Yeh, no harm in applying everywhere, give urself more options, and I recommend you actually go visit some of the colleges if possible, firsthand.
