The injury appears to have been damage to a major artery to the brain.

I have also just heard that the NZ v Pakistan test has been suspended while they decide what to do in the light of this tragedy, which I think is an appropriate gesture - particularly as both Hughes and Abbott were in the UAE only last month.

My thoughts are also with young Abbott who will also have to deal with what happened and do so for the rest of his life.

Life is so precious.
yes definitely, my thoughts are with him too, no one should have to be in that situation :(

Pakistan and New Zealand have suspended play for the day as a result - a sign of the regard in which he was held around the cricket world.

Very, very sad. Just played my school cricket game and as soon as the game finished we heard about the news. Everyone was shattered.

Thoughts with Sean Abbott, I doubt he will want to play cricket for a while.

One of the biggest tragedies to hit the cricket world and also the rest of the extended sporting world.

A case unheard of and unfortunately it happened to a young man doing what he loved best. Rest in Peace Phil Hughes and thoughts go out to his close family and friends.

Also poor Sean Abbott to have to deal with an incident like this. Hope he can cope with the incident.

Absolute tragedy. So hard to comprehend as a player myself. RIP Hughes, 63* forever...

Got to be feeling for Sean Abbott. His life will never be the same again.

He came into the world in November 88

I never met Phil but I cried for my mate.

I still can't believe what happened at he crease that day

To change the game of cricket in such an unforgettable way .

A hundred in each innings such a memorable feat
With other great records that will be so hard to beat
I never played for Oz , nor was part of the team
But Ive lost a great friend I wish it was a dream

What an outpouring of grief for one who had so much appeal
I can even imagine the pain the cricket team must feel
My tears still flow; it hurts so much but I want to pay my dues
To a person I never knew but will always be my friend Phil Hughes

It hard to believe he’s gone from our great game
And part of our game will never be the same
So vale Phil Hughes I wont forget that day in November
And every time I watch cricket I promise that you I’ll remember
