Well I probably count as a rightie now and I would say that the 'right' in Australia can be divided pretty cleanly into economic righties (most of the righties in NCAP) and social righties (eg Pauline Hanson). The former are generally aetheist/agnostic the later protestant/etc.

Frankly I dont like the rule of staying on topic. I like the natural evolution of a thread, even if they cullminate in Hitleresque/religious overtones. The old guard can handle it.

taking an idea from another forum . there should be a place called "Knowledge Corner"

its basiclly where mature discussions that hold no spam or completely off topic are held.

for example it can include topics ( including religion):

- religious debates, and anything to do with religion
- important world issues, that dont generally have a news article. eg war in iraq
- just intelligent thoughts that can be discusses eg impact of techology
- some important questions answred.

i think that non-school thread is flooded with useless , immature crap and shouldnt be mixed with stuff that can be discussed in this section

I think discussing issues such as economics, wars in Iraq and the like is fine in here, but religion seems to be on a different tangent to the rest of the forum.

Kevin Rudd and Christian Socialism?

It's just that the build-up of trashy threads, and the creation of more trashy threads (I winced seeing the 'why I believe in God but have no religion' thread). Some people treat this place like their blog.

My proposal is just for the sake of streamlining. We did it before with irrelevent threads on dogs eating human genitals and the sort and we should do it again with religion.

Church and State issues are a constant news/politics item. It would be a criminal waste, not unlike the recent burning of my muffins, to have them stricken from ncap. Religious discussion that deviates from current affairs and moves into subjective opinion or disputes over doctrine are a constant source of tedium which must be purged - not unlike unwanted food stains on valued clothing.

edit: Nay, they must be guarded against through some guarding mechanism akin to the protective shield that encompasses hostile invading alien life forms depicted in such recent films as Independence day or War of the worlds.

Executive powers, to be exercised relentlessly in the face of any displeasing number of religious doctrinal threads.

Executive powers- to be exercised relentlessly in the face of any displeasing number of religious doctrinal threads- invested in the moderator.

I'm open to suggestions

Usually I try to weed out the unrelated or at least compress it, though I've been on holiday this past week.

I don't see the need to create a separate forum for spirituality and theology. Ideology itself is often blindly followed and justified with pseudo logic. Religion is merely the most faith reliant branch of one's worldview.

(this coming from a militant atheist)

The problem with arguing about religion is that the very basis of religion is a belief in something you can't understand or comprehend in your lifetime. Part of the problem is that neither side will listen to the other and both sides regard themselves as above the other. Get rid of that attitude and get some respect for both sides, even if you don't like it, and I think life will be much easier.

Nah one of the worst things about arguing religion is that people believe you should have that sort of attitude... where as I feel most on this forum are of the view that we are all accountable to the objective truth and logic.

Actually, they often do listen to each other. There have been legitimate attempts to respond to both sides of the argument. I would note, though, that in the history of this subforum the non-believers have put forward the most reasonable and logical arguments. That is not necessarily to say that non-believers always have the best arguments world-wide (though that is my personal view), but certainly in these forums they have always been far ahead.

However I agree that a certain level of respect should be shown, and perhaps if one side is guilty of being rather derogatory towards the other then it is the non-believers. But it must be said that respect does not mean saying "we're all entitled to our own views so let's just let it be". It means putting forward intense argument with politeness and without trying to insult your opponent -- ripping up their arguments and not them.

Well.. there are some atheists on this forum that piss me off a little because they go into stupid arguments etc, but i don't think it's that bad.

true, but theres been many a time where i wanted to bash someones head in, because they didnt bother reading what the debate was on about, and they go post a reply to something on the first page of the thread, causing us to start an argument from the beginning.

I'm sorry, the starting post was a bit emotional. But you have to understand how saddening it is to get home from work at two in the morning to find that the most recent addition to your favourite politics forum is a 'why I believe in God but do not have a religion' thread.

I have no qualms in expressing a superiority over the religious.

Or something similar to the Light and Offbeat forum perhaps, or just move all the current religious threads in NCAP over to Light and Offbeat. I don't see anything wrong in categorising threads on religion and threads on men cutting off their genitals together.
So I make this huge reply, and then I got 404'd. Typical.

A summary :

1) You've become Rorix. Congratulations leetom.

2) At the militant atheist: I'm very proud of you. However, we are discussing whether it would be viable to create a new religion and spirituality sub forum, not whether religion itself is viable.

3) I basically said that we've had a broad range of philosphical discussion here in the past, and I don't see any reason for that to change, since most of those discussions are mainly as worthwhile or more so than general political discussion.

4) However, I do conceed that something needs to be done, since nearly half of the first 30 topics as I post this message either have something to do with Islam or religion generally, which is painful. I think a better solution would be if Moonlight just closed threads at his discretion which raise issues that already been debated/discussed.
