Schools use the net to eavesdrop on students (SMH, 12 August)

SCHOOLS are using internet monitoring companies to read what students are saying on social networking sites.
I guess the wider question to come from this revelation is whether the out of school activities and lives of students are any of a school's business. What do you all think?

Our 7-10 school admitted to monitoring us online last year.

Some Year 11 peeps in my grade were suspended for a few days, earlier in the year because they trolled or bullied some other Year 11 guy on facebook. Apparently, facebook notified the deputy principal of the matter LOL

Pretty disgusting. I would take some sort of legal action if my school did it. When you're outside of school, the school should have no part in your life. Bullying etc outside of school is a matter to be resolved by talking to them, their parents, police, etc.

lol...
I tend to bitch a lot about my school on the interwebs.
Tbh, my school would probably be too lazy/have better things to do than spy on us

I remember my school's assembly was stopped short so that the deputy principal could make a big speech about how defaming teachers on Facebook might be funny but accounted to 'defamation' and that the school could sue them...

Or something like that.

One of the deputies made a fake FB account and added everyone pretending to be an ex-student. Police were called in for severe breach of privacy. lulzy for school reputation.

Massive over reaction imo, like sure it was a tad mean but cmon take a joke you dopey cunts.

But really when it comes to shit like fb it's not like it's hard to make your wall friends only or whatever.

I don't mind if the school spy on me. I don't have double face. If you have something terrible, childish, idiotic you want to say, just keep it to yourself.
Try to behave like an adult.
Schools have no right to invade your personal life, full stop.

why

why cant they

if teachers wanna look up shit youre saying on the internet why cant they do that

dont put it on your gay facebook or whatever if you dont want that to happen

i dont think they should be allowed to get you in trouble for things you say on your fb or w/e though if its not publically broadcasted unless its in violation of the law

Doing it just before the hsc adds dimension to it but one of those quizes involved some fairly slanderous statements about a teacher having relations with a student which once the police got hold of they were obliged to make enquiries into it, it was then gotten at by a local paper and the teacher (whom the student admitted was just "weird" never did anything wrong) moved schools after complaints flowed in from parents. Subsequently all schools have been trying to stamp them out with hardline punishments, making an example of people etc. Would have been more ideal to make an example out of a year 11 student though.

These aren't simply personal life though, in many cases they are there for all to see and the ramifications of what they write can be significant. Twitter in particular is essentially an added dimension of the media as much as it is social networking.
