I never argued that contemporary western society was inferior.

democracies since our founding
Incorrect. Australia was initially an autocratic system with the governor overlooking the colony.
Even if you take it to mean 1901, then there were still some people excluded from voting.

But I like it how you tried to take it as a point of pride that this is a democracy. I suppose it gives you a false sense of belonging. Not only that, but a false sense of belonging to a country which "loves freedom"... As opposed to those other people. You know, those other people who love living in shackles and chains and under oppression. Pfff, what's wrong with them?

Nothing to be excited over.

Of course there are black spots like every other country.
But we can look past them!

Leaving aside all that it's not healthy to have a country that isn't proud of its history.
Oh no! :(

In less than two centuries we've become a first world country with a decent GDP.I think that's something to be proud of.
Free lunch?

But to the topic starter, no we don't have free welfare for irish germhounds who have trans-gender cancers, so I guess we should get ashamed and cut ourselves, cry and get angry at hoWARd.
lol, those silly politically correct denialist bastards. I'm not gonna be silly like them. Luckily you see the reality of the situation. I really love John Howard deep down in side. I dont feel sorry for what happened all those years ago, to do so would be just plain silly.. SILLY.

And a sense of superiority (by imagining yourself to *belong* to western society) is very important. As long as you're on the winning team, baby.

Cry me a river. If you had spent more time in school then hitting the bottle and sniffing petrol you could come up with more coherent sentences. Israel and most of the middle east is far more rascist then we ever will be.

Yes I am proud to be Australian, always have and always will.

Well if we count you guys then we have a roughly 50,000 year history, of which we deduce 25,000 must have been as the world's most racist nation.

You racist pricks :D

I dont know if we can be proud of our country, because there are certain facts in histroy of australia, which I am sure as hell not proud off.
Just like the germans.. I am sure most of them are sure as hell not proud of their histroy...

I was recently in Lublin, a Polish city on a language course, and met people from all over the world, and I was having a conversation with a guy names Marten from germany, and he asked me "What are australians patriotic about?" And I had no idea, no bloody idea. So I told him to leave it with me and i will give him the answer... it took me about 2 hours and I said to him "I dont know what individual people are patriotic about but I can guess... I told him about the 19th century, in particular through the eyes of Banjo and Lawson. IN the end he asked, isnt it just enough to be patrotic about what you have acomplished in life, your friends, family, life, job etc?

Again I had no answer for me, be initially I thought that to be patriotic had to have something to do with your country, but he told me to be patriotic, you have to accept all of countires history, and be proud of it, and not feel guilty to anything... He told me that coming from germany, there are may things from the country's history that he is certainly not proud of, but has a sense of responsibily for (mostly in reguard to the Nazi, WWII etc)... I guess the same is in Aus in reguard to the Stolen Generation, we have a sense of responsibily, but we do not have to feel guilt nor do we have to say sorry (One thing I want John Howard to STOP doing, saying sorry every bloody year... he did not do it personally so why should he say sorry...)

So I think what I am trying to say is that being proud of your histroy is certainly not a bad thing, as one does not feel guilty for the actions of our "forefathers" but we should certainly have a sense of responsibily for the actions. Not be ignorant to the past, but be away.

Does that make any sense what so ever?

By that standard noone should be proud of their country. For example Poland doesn't exactly have a sterling record when it comes to anti-semitism.

I agree with Poland not having a clean record... I guess its a personal debate in on self whether they can be proud of their country and accept the histroy that comes with it, or if they are ashamed of what their country has done... You cant pick your favourite parts an only be proud of them..

Its like having children, you are going to be proud of them, both the good and bad things that they do... You can tell them that you are not proud of them, bu you know your are lying, and the child works harder to make their parents proud...

Unfortunatly you cant change the past so countries can only work harder to make their modern history, history the people can be proud of...

ofcourse you should! TerraNullius=Rules! The British did nothing wrong when they settled in 1788. If people want to play the whole "the land was actually inhabited by the abos" Then you could say we invaded and conquered the place. Nothing wrong with that..!!

I was thinking of a debate we had back in year 7, and it was something along the lines of whether Australians should take pride in their country's history, and despite being an Australian myself, I thought not, particularly in relation to the whole aboriginal debate and its "founding".

Anyway, what do you people think?

In intention, at any rate, the English intelligentsia are Europeanized. They take their cookery from Paris and their opinions from Moscow. In the general patriotism of the country they form a sort of island of dissident thought. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box.

I hope you're joking when you said the Poms did nothing wrong.

Want links to things what Poms did to Abo's? Like e.g in Tasmania they round up abo's like a cattle in a farm and made them starve to death, plague with disease, children women etc died. and those tribes are actually extincted now.

I don't think we should take pride in our history because we didn't do anything. We should acknowledge the great/not so great things our forefathers have done but there's no need to get proud about it imo :/
