help please!! any info on the gods of apollo, artemis, orthia and poseidon! please and thankzz
These are just textbook definitions, the gods may have held deeper meanings to the Spartans, which you should probably look up.
Apollo (oddly meaning 'the destroyer'): Son of Zeus and Letto, he is also called phoebus, radiant god of light, music, prophecy and the arts. His most famous shrine was at Delphi, where his priestess, the Pythia, proclaimed the divine will. His son, Asclepius, the first physician, was patron of the healing arts
Artemis: Daughter of Zeus and Leto, twin sister of Apollo, she is virgin goddess of wildlife and the hunt. Although her arrows can inflict the pains of childbirth, she champions womens societies, such as those formed by the amazons.
Poseidon: Son of Cronus and Rhea, brother of Zeus and husband of Amphitrite. God of the sea and earthquakes, he used his three pronged trident to raise storms and swamp ships. Also associated with travel.
EDIT: ooh i was just looking up 'Orthia' cuz id never heard of her before and its actually pretty cool. From what i gather shes like a 'epithet' or 'form' of Artemis so really shes 'Artemis Orthia'. So Artemis Orthia encompassed a particular aspect of Artemis that the Spartans thought important. Apparently her sanctuary was really important to the Spartans, it was were young boys underwent diamastigosis (tests of strength, endurance, pain threshold etc).
