I doubt NOLS will get kicked out, but they won't hold a majority on the council this year, which could make for some very interesting deal brokering over the Christmas break.

And the fact that she aligns herself with a pack of Jew bashers.

not that i dont believe you, just that ive only heard rumours about that sort of thing, and no actual 'this person did this' statements.

I don't have evidence that would be permissable in court, no, but from the things I've heard shouted at Jewish students passing by their stall and the fact that security guards had to step in to drag them away from the AUJS stall during week 8 I think it's fairly likely those were the people the VC was referring to.

The radical left are made up of Jew-bashers, and I would argue that for both their history of violence AND their anti-semitic viewpoints, that it would take a deluded person not to realise that once they have a reason ("fighting Zionism"), that "violence is justified" (yes, an actual Pepperspray Paddy quote). This is his recollection of events from a couple weeks ago, borrowed from the Sydney University Education Action Group mailing list:

Just quickly,

I walked past the AUJS stall on Thursday and shouted, "stop the Genocide.
Free Palestine!" then kept walking. A Zionist said, "we are not for
Genocide", so I turned around, began walking towards them and pointing out
why what is currently occuring in Gaza can be considered nothing less than
Genocide. at this point the plain clothes, aswell as uniformed security
goons lurking around the stall ran up and started PUSHING me away from the
stall saying "get out of here". I was really pissed off, told them to get
their hands off me and I had every right to expressing my political
opinion, but they kept PUSHING me back away from the stall. It was fucked
up. The zionists kept arguing from behind the thugs but I wasn't allowed
to respond. They then demanded my ID or I'd be ejected from campus.

Anyway I made a complaint, but we should be clear about what is going on
here.

In the context of the expanding war on terror, the University is coming
under pressure from the Federal Government (and willing conceding to this
pressure) to crack down on anti-war activity. Stopping "anti-Semitism" is
disgracefully being used as a political cover to slam dissent to the war.
The recent letter from the Federal Minister for Immigration instructing
the AVCC to move against "anti-semitism" on the campus (printed in this
weeks honi) is clear evidence of this. It comes in a long line of recent
pushes from the Government to get University administrations to ramp up
repression: monitor post-grad students, allow ASIO access to student
activity, cut back critical courses, shift research towards "Securing
Australia".

Any opposition to this needs to come in a wider student fightback against
the War

in Solidarity
Paddy

ps Building electoral alliances with forces such as AUJS to get yourself
votes, ie "Wham for AUJS", encourages this kind of thing. Shame Angus
Shame.

I hate to say it, but the only way to get rid of those guys is to join the Sydney University Liberal Club. Don't worry - they accept reformed lefties too. I'd like to think of myself as "Liberal Extreme Left" - I support Liberal policy regarding VSU and students Not beating up cops, but I wouldn't vote for John Howard even if they threatened to hang me off the harbour bridge by my balls. Well, maybe I would - I live in a very, very safe Labor electorate so my vote doesn't count for shit.

The fact is though, that at student level every voice counts. The SRC quotes statistics showing that "90% of students support USU" because 90% of the 10% of students who actually bother to vote supported Labor/Socialist candidates. Liberal Students have worked incredibly hard to fight the SRC's corruption, but even though we have the support of the vast majority of students at USYD, we don't have the resources or the people to mount a concerted offense on the corruption of the Left. The Left have it hard enough trying to convince people that they should forcibly donate $500 a year to their political causes, but we've got an even harder mission - to convince uninterested students to use their Voices and actually vote to save their SRC and their wallets.

If you are pissed off with "our" SRC, "our" Union or "our" SU Sport, I would encourage you to join SULC - even if you don't think of yourself as "Liberal". SULC is not only the only significant force on campus representing the interests of students, it's also surprisingly accommodating of left-wingers, former Labor hacks, even Chinese Communists like me.

It probably won't, but at least Pepperspray Paddy and his friends won't be receiving money from the SRC for it.

I'd like it noted for the record that Phanatical is NOT representative of the official position of SULC. Nor does he actually know what he's talking about.

QUAH. SHUT UP.

they so have to use that next election, would get em more votes than the current tactic of pretending to be centrist independants.
i'm envisioning big "fuck socialism" neon signs and "you know we're right" tshirts

Incorrect. The people who support VSU will either not vote at all, or already know who we are. We did better this year despite having less campaigners, despite having bugger all posters, despite having virtually no presence on campus before the day purely because we offered a more accessible policy than what CHOICE did last year. That said, we still managed to get posters reported for being homophobic, and Dan and I apparently got reported to the returning officer for saying Palestine doesn't exist.

EDIT: Also you don't see NOLS running under the banner of "For an SRC that fights for higher taxes", or the socialists running under "For an SRC that stockpiles weapons for a bloody revolution".
