Why is a shuttle bus needed when it wouldn't be any faster than existing buses leaving from circular quay?

Because bus services running from the Quay to main campus are unreliable and expensive.

But they come every 10 minutes and cost $1.40 or something?

I know its a bitch because public transport is in fact unreliable but every ten minutes.....

What exactly does having a position on this council entail?

We'll never know because 98% of student politicians are completley and utterly useless.

1. Get a travelpass.
2. They're only unreliable when you're waiting for a certain bus number, whereas pretty much every bus from circular quay goes to Sydney Uni.

Lengy: We go to a meeting once a month and vote on the actions the SRC should take for certain situations. I'm pretty sure the president/exec can authorise minor spending, but major spending must be authorised by the council (I think). Steph would know better as she was the treasurer this year.

Normally, I'd agree - and frankly it's not gonna be a huge issue on my agenda for the year. But the issue is that for quite a number of students, carrying instruments between campuses has proven quite difficult. In one example, third year composer Louie carries a cello from his main campus class to the Con every Tuesday. I've caught this bus with him on several occasions - on one particularly painful time, it took us 40 minutes to get a bus, because the line of main campus students waiting to get to Central or Town Hall was so big it filled up several buses (I figure that maybe passengers should give way to those travelling all the way to the Quay). When we DID get a bus, the cello casing was kicked no less than eight times between USYD and Town Hall. Two years ago my friend Naomi (who lived on campus) actually had her $32000 Con-owned cello damaged on public transport. After it was repaired, the university security basically had to drive her and her instrument between campuses until she graduated.

A shuttle bus running between the Con, Law school and main campus is Obviously most appealing for the convenience factor. I DO believe that such a bus service would be very beneficial to the increasing numbers of students who currently travel between campuses for classes. But the economic reality is simple - it won't happen. Nonetheless, I'll continue to work for it - because it is my job as an SRC rep to listen to, and Try and address the problems faced by Con students. My role is similar to that of the defunct CSA, or the Con Education Action Group - my job is now to listen to what Con students want, then make higher authorities like the Dean aware of what the priorities of students are.

My agenda for 2007 is far more than "an ATM for the Con", or "better library hours" - though these Are important. I see my role as the Con's rep-elect as double sided. On one hand, I will be working with the Lib/Ind students on council to bring a sense of sanity to proceedings. On the other, I will be working towards a long term goal I have had since my first presidency run, of Conservatorium secession from the Union and SRC, and amalgamation with the Students' Association of the Sydney College of the Arts. Since it's like, 4am, and I'm currently finishing a whole bunch of paperwork for the Rose Jackson appeal, I'll write a bit about this plan too.

It is, in the judgement of both ranking Con students and SCA students that an integration of the Con student body into the SASCA would be beneficial to both campuses - SASCA is much better placed to offer services to a similarly small campus like the Con, and the Con student body would enrich the artistic sensibilities of SASCA - an organisation that currently maintains its own art gallery and performance space in Balmain. SASCA's biggest difficulty is the relatively small membership it currently enjoys - amalgamating the Con into SASCA would increase its size by 2.5 times, which would in turn give it greater financial security under VSU. A SCA/SCM union would be a student organisation dedicated to the cultivation of the arts by emerging talents in both the visual and performing arts, and if nothing else would be FAR more relevant to Con students than the USYD Union.

What's there to stop a million students piling into the shuttle bus, creating the same problem?

In theory, yes. In reality the Council does very little because meetings are normally inquorate. This should be improved when the number of people on Council is reduced for 2008.
Generally, Council votes on broad policy (position on VSU, whether to host conferences etc) and hears the reports of officers. Exec manages the day to day operation of the organisation (e.g. should we buy a photocopier, should we print these leaflets). The minor/major spending distinction hasn't held this year (Exec has approved major expenses like refitting the bookshop). It normally suits the President to run everything through Exec, because NOLS have held a majority on it the past few years and they encounter less opposition than when the whole Council is there.

I'm sorry to say, I don't think NLS/Unity will have a majority on council OR executive this year.

EDIT: I'm not sorry at all.

The reason the Con doesn't have the funding it needs, is because the funding that SHOULD be going to the Con is going to main campus.
Why the fuck should the Con get more funding?

It's for fucking musicians.

I find it outrageous that any money should go to Con students, let alone your proposition that more money should be taken away from those taking a real, productive degree.

If Con students want to pursue a more expensive and specialised recreational activity such as music, at a separate campus they should be forced to pay higher fees to support this superfluousness.

Anyone remember what Q4 was?
Something along the lines of "Should the University declare its partnerships with non-environmentally friendly corporations? "

I think I said no to that one, although later reading the rationale for the question (ie, the University cannot objectively purchase green energy if its being sponsored by an oil rig) probably should have said yes.

The questions read:

1) Does our University have a responsibility to take action on climate change?

2) Should our University commit to reducing its energy, in order to reduce our impact on climate change?

3) Should our University commit to purchasing at least 20% GreenPower (the University currently purchases none)?

4) Should our University publicity declare its existing partnerships with the fossil fuel and nuclear industries?
