*** THERE ARE TWO ELECTIONS RUNNING CONCURRENTLY. THIS THREAD IS ABOUT ELECTIONS FOR THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES COUNCIL (SRC) INFORMATION ABOUT THE OTHER ELECTION FOR WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE NOW RECIEVED A BALLOT PAPER ARE IN A DIFFERENT THREAD ***

Hi guys,

Yes, it is that time of year again when yet again the student politicians come out and show off their campaign t-shirts, their lecture bashing skills, their photocopying skills, their chalking skills and any other skills they may possess in an effort to persuade you to vote for them.

The Election of the 79th University of Sydney Students' Representative Council
will be held on
Wednesday the 20th and Thursday the 21st of September 2006.

Candidates running for election are:

Angus McFarland (NLS)
Dan Jones (Broad Left which includes Greens, Solidarity, Independents and remaining Hippies)
Alma Torklakovic (Socialist Alliance)
Sonia Lipski (Liberal)

Details as I have them, Monday 4th September, idMedia News Digest

More details have become available from the Election Edition of Honi Soit, available from almost all Union Publication stands from the 6th of September. (ie. yesterday)

Link to the online version will be posted when it becomes available.

Nominations for positions close Wednesday 30th of August at 5pm. NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED Further information can be found here. Applications for postal voting if you are not going to be in attendance can also be found at that link.

So, a few things....

1) In accordance with the SRC Regulations, Part 8, Section 26, sub-section G on page 51 of the SRC Consitution which states that:

The USyd SRC Constitution said:
PRACTICES FORBIDDEN:
26. g) No person shall take part in any promotion of candidates until twelve days prior to the first polling day.
Therefore, this thread will not open until 9am on Friday the 8th of September. If any member believes that this should not be the case, please PM me with reasons as to why.

2) Further information about the Elections will be posted here as they become available ie. lists of candiates and their nominators. Any additional information which I may have overlooked should, yet again, be PMed to me.

3) As per usual practice in the past, members from this forum who are running in the Election and wish to have their policy statement made to the forum, please PM me with the statement as you would like it to be seen and it will be placed in a locked thread.

The reason for this procedure is two-fold.
i) to prevent the main Election discussion thread (this thread) being full of conversations between forum members and candidates. All questions regarding a candiates policies and themselves in general should be directed to them by whichever manner of contact they choose to divulge ie, PM's, e-mails whatever.
ii) so that other forum members who do not wish to participate in student politics of any kind can clearly see where it is happenning and avoid it.
Currently, this is the most practical set-up for advertising candidates without clutter. If anyone else can come up with a better idea, I'm all ears.

4) THE TOKEN POINT: INFORMATION FOR FIRST YEARS

Just like in May, when you inundated with flyers from various people running for election on to the Union Board, Second Semester brings with it the SRC Elections, which are actually 4 elections rolled into one.

During these elections, we are voting for

The President of the SRC
The Delegates to the NUS (National Union of Students)
The Editors of Honi Soit
The Representatives to the SRC Council

Most of the major political parties on campus will run people in all these sections and in this election you will have the choice of voting above the line (ie, one tick in one box for one parties whole package) or below the line (ie, you may agree with one parties Honi ticket but not their President so you pick and choose who you want where.)

Bear in mind that if you vote above and below the line, the vote will be counted as if you marked below the line only. (SRC Consitution, page 45)

As with the Union Elections, this forum has members running and there are also preference deals which happen between the various parties. All campaign materials should be taken with a grain of salt. If you are really interested in student politics, you should read the student publications on campus for information as well as the iDMedia News Digest which is the Media Societies weekly online publication. The archives are also an excellent source of historical information if you should so wish to seek it.

5) the Usual Disclaimer...

Please also be aware that whilst I would not report any of you to the SRC directly, if you should contravene any of the regulations outlined in the Consitution, one of the other candidates may report you. This forum is public territory and as such, all usual practices regarding appropriate behaviour and treatment towards other candidates should be observed. This includes harrassment. As per usual, all normal forum rules also apply and thus, any spam (in this thread, defined as what is not pertinent to the Elections and Student Politics in general) will be removed.

6) I'm a little scatterbrained today so I've probably missed something. Throw a PM in my direction if so.

More information will be added as it becomes available.

Regards,
Susan :)

Due to my incorrect interpretation of the rules, I've been advised by several candidates that campaigning was allowed to start as of today so let the pain begin.

I want to know:

1) Who is running
2) What do they stand for

For the record, I wasn't on campus today so I apologise if these seem like stupid questions to all of you who already had to endure the torture today.

It'll get worse.

Sonia Lipski
Presidential Candidate for Voice

The SRC has long been run as a political party mechanism. A change is long overdue. It is time our Student Representative Council was run for the benefit of ALL students, rather than a political entity that works for only a small portion of our student population. The SRC has become so far removed from the needs and interests of students. Rather private political agendas are being lived out through the workings of OUR SRC. It is time for a change, and time for the encompassing student VOICE to be heard, instead of a singular political voice.

Our political factions have had their shot and they have failed repeatedly - I stand to offer you a viable alternative where previous elected leaders have failed. Under my Presidency, there will be transparency and access to the decision making processes. There will be neither hidden political agendas nor underlying political causes behind the SRC's actions. There will be only One Cause -that of the Student Cause.

I believe it is every student's right as a student of Sydney University to be treated fairly and equally. All students must have equal access to mainstream University Services irrespective of ethnicity, religion or sexuality.

As SRC President I will draw upon my own experiences as a student to facilitate the provision of essential student services. I am here to serve the entire Student Population - not hidden interests, or a desire for power.

It is time for the Student VOICE to be the dominant voice.

I have had experience in addressing youth health and social problems. I believe it is every student's intrinsic right as a member of Sydney University to have access to health and welfare services. Under my Presidency no student will be turned away from a University service when they are in need.

It is time the SRC complied with its “environmentally friendly” label. In the 2005 election, more surplus flyers were printed on non-recycled paper and discarded than the entire print run produced by the Arts Music unit, for example, in a year. It is time OUR SRC and OUR university endorsed environmentally friendly policy and follow through the paper work with real actions. It is time we start fighting real issues with real solutions.

No Australian student should be unable to gain a tertiary education due to a lack of finances. I will make it the responsibility of the 79th SRC to offer more student loans. Under my presidency, we will fight for student income support that will actually support our students and not leave them out in the rain. I stand for strong and real solutions.

As SRC President, I will ensure the SRC advocates a strong VOICE on issues affecting Sydney University Students. A VOICE that does not waver, nor is influenced by party politics nor hidden agendas. It is time the encompassing student VOICE was heard.

SONIA & VOICE
Your SRC. Your Voice.

And Andrew, why are you so fond of that picture of your Liberals to use on all your websites with dead links. Why oh why oh why??

You really don't do yourself any favours at all.

I'm building a site right now. Like you, I didn't realise campaigning started today until yesterday - so I'm playing catch-up.

I don't like party politics, but supporting Voice is hardly a compromise. Like me, the candidates on Voice tickets are students of a lot of different political persuasions (NOT JUST LIBERALS) who believe that the SRC should represent students as students - and not students as political pawns with deep pockets.

Sonia Lipski is a fantastic candidate, and she has the leadership capability to unify the SRC and restore its relevance to our fellow students. More importantly though, she truly has the interests of students at heart - and it's for this reason that I wholeheartedly support her.

That's the great thing about my faculty. The lack of representation.

Good lord, I nearly tripped down the stairs TWICE going through Graffitti Tunnel today...once when I saw "Alma for Prez" and second when I saw "Vote Angus for President".

I will lose ALL faith in usyd's student community if either of those make it (which looks like it's probable, so good bye faith!)

Alma's campaign appears to be mainly based around "Students Against War and Racism", which is certainly ridiculous as it is does not concern majority of the problems/issues/students on campus!!!! Her ranting and raving about stopping the war ain't going to stop the war!!!! Hence why I hate rallies...they get hippies nowhere (apart from jail).

And Angus...please don't get me started on him. He annoyed the shit out of me in first year, and now that he's running i dread seeing his face every day on posters. Actually, he once overhead me bitching about him and gave me a very bitchy filthy look lol I was waiting for him to come over and girly slap me!

I'm running on the Voice for Engo ticket. I came 2 or 3 votes short of a rep position last year, so your votes actually do count. Also, if elected, I promise to propose the following policy motions, all in one meeting:
- The SRC condemns the Labor party for their attempts to censor the internet.
- The SRC condemns Young Labor for their support of slavery.
- The SRC condemns itself for being an undemocratic, unaccountable and corrupt organisation packed with Labor hacks.
- The SRC condemns the WorkChoices legislation for being too left wing.
- The SRC congratulates the Howard government on 10 years of much needed reform, and hopes the Coalition continues to do so for many more years to come.
- The SRC realises that a complete full fee system for university is the only socially and fiscally responsible course of action that the Australian government can take, and will strive to bring about such reform.
- The SRC believes that affirmative action:
a) is undemocratic.
b) is discrimination.
c) causes resentment in the workplace and society for those it allegedly "benefits".
d) insults those it "benefits" by implying that they cannot gain positions in a legitimate manner.
e) means that the best person for a position is not always selected.
- The SRC believes that tax is theft.
- The SRC believes that inflation is fraud.
- The SRC acknowledges the existence and greatness of pirates.
- The SRC acknowledges that its last four major campaigns, being stop VSU, stop HECS increases, save nursing and no war, have all been dismal failures.
- The SRC condemns George Bush for being a communist, by refusing to veto a spending bill thus far in his presidency.
- The SRC acknowledges that people named Stan are inherently evil and should not be allowed on the council.
- The SRC supports the creation of a network of tunnels around the campus.
- The SRC supports the creation of a monorail between main campus and all satellite campuses.
- The SRC acknowledges that it is meeting on Queen Elizabeth II's traditional land.
- The SRC recognises that it is becoming increasingly irrelevant to students.
- The SRC recognises that if Kim Beazley is to ever win an election he needs to lose some weight and get a personality transplant.
- The SRC supports pre-emptive strikes against the Moon.
- The SRC acknowledges that, at this juncture, "green" power is too inefficient to effectively power Australia, and supports a transition from coal to nuclear power while renewable energies continue to be developed.
- The SRC welcomes VSU as a great victory for students' right to choose.
- The SRC acknowledge that it is unfair for students who choose not to have children to fund the childcare of those that do.
- The SRC acknowledges that some of its more left wing councillors would be more at home in a zoo than a student organisation.
- The SRC acknolwedges that it needs to redraft its constitution to remove all communist propaganda.
- The SRC condemns the ACTU for wasting so much money on a scare campaign filled with blatant lies about WorkChoices.

Does anybody remember the candidate Doug for Union from a few years ago? Apparently he and Angus are romantically linked. Just a bit of goss...
