Schools to be quizzed on calls for HSC help

THE NSW Ombudsman is looking into the low proportion of public high school students applying for HSC exam disability provisions compared with private school students.
Private schools accounted for more than half the applications for special provisions this year, despite educating just one in four students with disabilities, figures from the NSW Board of Studies show.
An education official has told the Herald the Ombudsman is looking into why public schools do not make more applications for the special provisions.
What a way to game the system. This woman should be slapped across the face or something! Seriously, never going to wherever she practices.

Are we allowed to name the student? The article gives some clues to finding out her name ..
No. No posting of her name, you've all been warned. Posts will be deleted and infracted as such.

Her whole case is seriously laughable and a clear demonstration of the value of an ATAR/UAI for determining intelligence. However, I will say that the Board of Studies current system for determining special provisions is a joke. Some people get it for ridiculous stufff whilst others with legitimate problems get nothing. To get spec provs all you have to do is play the system in the right way. I hope the ombudsmen reams the BOS for the process.

This is just stupid (no offence)... even if we're not allowed to post her name... other people are still gonna be able to find it from the Board of Studies website...after deriving some vital information from the news article.

EDIT: This is a very nice legal loophole.....SMH not allowed to post her name..... but allowed to post her school's name and her achievements in her HSC.
You think I don't know that? :rolleyes2: Doesn't matter, there's a reason why SMH didn't post her name, and as a result, we won't either. And if you think it's stupid, to be honest, I don't really care.

If you want to find her name, I can't stop you. But you won't post it on the forums.

The law is stupid (I can only marvel in its stupidity at times). However, it is what it is and you need to follow it regardless.

I cannot even fathom the stupidity of this girl and her parents. What does she gain in achieving 100UAI? At the moment, anyway? Nothing. Get higher assessment marks? Get rank 1 then, idiot.
I think she wanted to get into USYD Medicine. :tongue2:

I don't care about the name... I'm just interested about the ridiculousness of privacy law in the news article.
It's not privacy law, there has been no suppression order handed down by the courts. You're free to post her name all over facebook if you'd like. However, what is at stake is common decency - she has clearly asked SMH not to reveal her identity, we can assume that she would ask the same here. If someone posted your name on BoS and you wanted it taken down, we would oblige.

Maybe she had a doctor father who helped dodge up some medical forms, I mean it's probably a genetic condition right?
No. The system doesn't work like this. You can't get just a medical certificate to get special provision. It's a much longer and harder system to foil including processes of talking to health professionals, getting assessed by board approved occupational therapists (daddy wouldn't be a valid signatory), assessments from specialists in the field of the condition she has etc. Her assessment obviously deemed only extra time and rest breaks were applicable, a computer was not. So the board made the appropriate and objective decision. Yes, I agree that it seems ridiculous she's complaining now, but this is NOT the fault of the system.

This post makes some really important points. This is NOT a case of private schools screwing the system and rich kids being better off. Applications for special provisions are open to EVERYONE. It's just that more private school people proportionately apply for them. We don't know entirely why this is (perhaps they're more aware of it as an option, perhaps these students have better access to specialists to diagnose their conditions etc), point is, WE DON'T KNOW WHY. So again, it's not the fault of the system.

probably because usyd doesn't need umat and she knew she'd go badly in it because she's a terrible person
Ever heard of gamsat? USyd only offers post-grad med courses and to be accepted into them, you must take the gamsat which is the equivalent of umat but for people who are going for post-grad med entry (ie it's actually harder than the umat)

yes i have
it was my understanding that 99.95ers were guarenteed entry into post grad med once they've completed their undergrad degree (ie not doing gamsat)

can you ever forgive me for not knowing the ins and outs of usyd medicine, blue suede?
