Subject: Need advice on which HSC subject to drop (Business vs Eco vs Legal) (1 Viewer)

Hey everyone, I’m in a bit of a dilemma and could really use some advice.

I’m currently on 14 units and need to drop one subject. The three on the chopping block are Business Studies, Economics, and Legal Studies. Here’s where I’m at:

• Business Studies: I know the scaling isn’t great and there’s a lot of content, but I got over 90 in prelim and I don’t find it boring. My school also has a strong cohort for it, at least at the top end. Why I’d drop it: scaling + content load. Why I’d keep it: I’m doing well and don’t hate it.
• Economics: I love economics - I’m a total geek for it - but my marks have dropped from 100 to 74. The teacher gets distracted a lot and the cohort isn’t very strong, which makes it harder. Why I’d drop it: declining marks + weak class environment. Why I’d keep it: I genuinely enjoy it.
• Legal Studies: I like Legal and got above 90 in prelim, but the HSC content so far feels a bit laborious. The teacher is good, the cohort is decent, and the subject has a strong history of Band 6s at my school. Also i find myself talking a lot about the content we learnt in the prelim, since it's quite relevant in the real world. Why I’d drop it: workload + content feels heavy. Why I’d keep it: good teacher, good results history, and I don’t mind the subject.

Basically, I’m torn between choosing the subject I enjoy most, the one I perform best in, and the one that will scale or support me the most.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s done these subjects or been in a similar situation.

Please don't drop economics if you love it! You won't regret it. The skills and way of thinking that you learn from the subject are so valuable. Also, if you genuinely enjoy it, you may consider a degree related to econ in the future, in which your HSC knowledge can help you out. My marks also slipped a little in Year 12, but I was still able to rank 1st and achieve a high band 6 mark in the HSC. How's your rank looking right now? To compensate for the weak class environment, you may need to spend some extra time on econ at home - to make sure you don't miss content due to a disengaged teacher, you could review everything using a textbook (Pearson is great), and seek out study resources or practice materials online.

I can't speak for the other subjects, but it sounds like you have a genuine interest in legal as well, since the prelim content is still swimming around in your head. You're not doing much better in business, and since legal scales better, I'd be inclined to drop business, as you don't seem to care much for the subject. Also, legal + economics as a subject combo is solid for many business-related careers in the future!

Helllooo! Thanks for your opinion, well I'm currently ranked one since, however i'm tied with four others, since task one was an assignment, I hope I remain in the top three if I continue with it. I'm more than willing to put more study hours in the subject, i'm also thinking about maybe a tutor?? but idk. I'm also ranked one for business which makes this even more agonising. The problem with the eoc teacher is that he treats the class more like an uni lecture, and his style slowly descends into anecdotal ramblings, which have nothing to do with the course ;-;.

Congrats on your ranks! In that case, dropping a subject in which you're rank 1st in may not be the best idea. Is there anything else that you could drop?

Definitely don't drop eco, though. If you need a tutor then you can shoot me a DM, but I think you should keep doing what you're doing. My teacher was also a rambler lol... if anything, maybe you can use this opportunity to get better at independent learning.
