Basically what the title says.

If you were to take the turbo out of a Skyline GTST, cos of the P plate restriction y0, would it still drive decent?

Also, may as well ask this here, are green P platers restricted on turbos and high powered cars as well? Or only red P's?

Thankies :]

Just get a non-turbo Nissan Skyline. I'm assuming you're after the R32 so look for the GTS-25 Type-X, S, XG or GTS Type-X, S, J.

Licence restrictions for P2 licences

* Zero Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) – You cannot have any alcohol in your system when you drive a vehicle.

* Demerit points – If you incur 7 or more demerit points during the term of the licence action will be taken to suspend the licence. Note that demerit points may carry over to your full licence.

* Display of P plates – P plates (green P on a white background) must be clearly displayed on the front and back of the vehicle.

* Licence class – Can only drive up to a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence class.

* Passengers – The one passenger condition applies to provisional licence holders disqualified for a driving offence. After the disqualification period, you will be restricted to carrying no more than one passenger at all times while driving, for 12 months.

* Seatbelts – You must ensure all occupants including yourself, are in a seat that has a seatbelt or an approved restraint fitted and that each passenger is using the seatbelt or restraint.

* Speed limit – You must not drive faster than 100 km/h and must observe the speed limit where it is below 100 km/h.

* Supervising a learner – You must not supervise a learner driver.

* Vehicles – You must not drive any vehicle with:
o Eight or more cylinders.
o A turbocharged or supercharged engine (diesel powered engines exempt).
o Modifications that increase engine performance.
o Any other vehicle identified by the RTA – further details available on the RTA website.
Please note exemptions may apply.

In addition to the above, the following restriction applies from 1 July:

* Display of P plates – P plates (green P on white background) must be clearly displayed on the front and back of the outside of the vehicle. The letter P on the plate must not be hidden.

Fuck, so much useless info.

If a car comes stock with a turbo. Let it be.
It's like asking, if I have two legs, and chop one off.. Will I still be able to run decently?

ALL p-platers are restricted.

LOL Good analogy.

To TC; even if you take the turbo out, it'll probably still be classified as a prohibited vehicle because of the model of the car itself and not the lack of turbo; and again even without the turbo, I'm pretty sure insurance won't come cheap for the Skyline name. When you go to quote the model number, people will assume it has a turbo.

Why not just wait until you're off P restrictions and buy it then? Or if u're in it for the Skyline look/image/brand, get a non turbo one?

I'm not even on my P's yet. Just been looking around at different cars and sussing out options.

The idea of simply taking the turbo out until full licence was appealing cos then it's just a matter of taking it to the mechanic and putting it back in. Easy peasy.

I didn't even think about it still being classified as a hoon machine even if I took it out, fair point thar.

Insurance doesn't bother me so much... like it's going to be high for whatever I get anyways. (Yes I know it will be [a lot] higher for the Skyline)

So I guess non turbo is the way to go then ]: *tear*

Thanks for all your input peeps!

I've never umm... taken a turbo out of a car; can anyone clarify if this is a straight forward process?

Its a hugely complex process. Turbo engines run at a much lower cylinder compression ratio 7.5:1 while NA engines will run closer to 9.5:1. If you take teh turbo out with out rasing the compression ratio (this involves using different pistons) the engine will run like crap. Also you would need to swap out the engine management computer for a non turbo one.

yeah, putting on a turbo isnt a good idea unless you forge the pistons and lower their compression ratio (if they are high. you can keep it high but you will always have maximum boost, so you cant redline it too much) and to take a turbo off you will need to raise the compression ratio.

touching the engine will always cost alot. why, oh why? *wails*

You don't 'forge' the pistons, they are forged. The pistons don't have a compression ratio; they're metal. That bit in brackets is bullshit too. Everything you wrote is wrong or stupid, wtf m8?

Acaanpca is on the money, however it's not hugely complex, just stupid. Some 32s came out with a rb25de, although it's not the same engine as the 33 DEs which have variable timing(NVCS or whatever), which go a bit harder.

Marquis no R33 skyline came out with the RB20, your information is falty.

Magnet i think veteran was refering to the compression in the head, turbo charged and supercharged engines do run a lower compression.

Quik You should look into the R33 GTS An awesome car and good value too. Non turbo 2.5 litre inline 6 with 147 kw's they don't go too shabby and you can pick up one with about 90 thou on the clock for about 10 grand. If your looking to spend more there are R34 GTS (non turbo) around for about 17 grand.

My friend has this. Goes alright. A V6 commodore or Falcon are only slower cos of automatic transmission. Another friend has a non-turbo 300ZX and it walks the skyline.

but seriously...
if you just have to have rice-
then skylines are quickest to cook rice.

you could do the swap.

or you could just find a Non-Turbo skyline engine and do the swap,
it isnt really as difficult if you pick the right engine,

and - that way you can put the original engine on a stand and rebuild it, turbo and all, with some sweet synthetic oil, and all your "trust" and "nismo" parts or whatever maybe even a bigger garret snail and some extractors.

the p plater laws just fuking ruined every fucking thing.
now i cant drive my mum or dads cars cause there both V8,

and i bet you'd be a million times more likely to die a sick burning death stuck in an upside down Hyudai peice of shit, than you would be driving your mum or dads car like a turbo, supercharged or a V8/V10/V12. Im pretty sure the rta stopping me from driving my mums V8 beamer with about 20 thousand airbags in it is a stupid thing to do. especially seeing as how i wouldnt dare crash or hoon in that thing,
but - if i had to have a civic cause its what we have to drive i'd hoon the shit out of it.
'nuff said.

lulz @ exemptions. How long do you have to have been in that situation to get an exemption?

ie work as a tradie and be allowed to drive turbos?

loopholez ftw.
