Mark Vaile recently stated his belief that the National party could, and would pick up more seats at the next federal election. He made reference to the return of larry anthony, and was optimistic about winning the new seat of Flynn and reclaiming the seat of Richmond from the ALP...

Do you think after AWB, the sale of Telstra and the current poor image the government...will allow the Nats to win more seats?

Most people with any kind of decent political science background will tell u that the National Party is a party is decline. This is backed up by the long term fall in National party numbers in parliament. The Nats get their power base from those in the bush, because they claim to be there for those living in the country. Independents are moving in to fill these places vacated by the Nats. the independents are also there specifically for the people in their seats, often the country. In essence they are replacing the Nats in this role. indies have a community focus (most are former mayors or prominent members of their community pre being elected) but are not hindered by having to toe a party line.

I'm going to guess that the above posters are probably all city dwellers with little affinity for the bush or the good work the National Party does to represent regional areas.

Every election the Nationals are supposed to die yet they survive and contribute to policy decisions time and time again. The independents are supposed to be invincible yet the Victorian Nationals reclaimed Mildura and got a decent 2PP swing in Gippsland East, and at the last federal election they got a bit of a swing in Kennedy.

Flynn is notionally National, and they are a chance to take seats like Leichhardt, Forde and Fadden.

Nats haven't picked up any seats since the early 90s, nor have they won a 3 cornered contest in a very long time. They'll still exist in Queensland for some time, but will die out in the rest of Australia over the next 12-15 years.

From memory, wasn't there Cowper in 1998 or 2001 that the Nats won?

And if you look at the state level, the Nats have won plenty of 3 corners in SA, Vic, Qld.

At the last election the Liberals contested those last three seats, they are a dying breed mostly at the expense of the Liberals, Forde and Fadden is actually in the Brisbane suburbs and have never been contested by the National Party.

In 2001 Luke Hartsuyker (National) took over from Garry Nehl, also a Nat, who had held Cowper since 1984.

Joh Bjelke Petersen is to blame for the Nationals downfall from his legacy of corruption and anti-intellectualism and even One Nation had threatened its existance for a time and shows how fragile they will be especially if they are seen as a liability rather than a credibility by the Liberals. We may see more McGauran-styled defections especially in Victoria, his brother may even defect too.

The Nations with their monopoly the rural issues debate is ultimately detrimental to rural Australia. Why can't they just die and let the Libs/Lab compete for the country vote? Maybe I'm a little naive, so enlighten me.

Sorry the nationals achieved a swing on the primary vote but dont pose any threat to Bob Kater, if anybody would win that seat one would expect the ALP to, as they finished second on the 2CP

John Cobb is now contesting Calare after the massive boundary changes to his former seat of Parkes, wonder how he'll go against Peter Andren.
