babikakez: You probably won't lose it. We were told in my former store that in the unlikely event of a refit before 2070 that we would keep our staggered express, 3 registers which run down the side of the service desk, facing parallel with the aisles, if you get what i mean?

I saw this in another refurbed store, i think its common practice in stores of your size. However it seems you have more than 3 express, which may affect such an outcome.
We have six express lanes, and if we ever got self serve, they'd have to get rid of part of our trolley bay and two express lanes (I think). But our refit is a long while away.

I know, i find it a bit pedantic. Most of my weekdays are like:

09:00 - 11:00 Operator
11:00 - 12:00 Supervision
13:00 - 14:00 Meal
12:00 - 18:00 Operator

I would prefer a simple roster than that 70c extra for ONE hour of doing the CSM's lunch break. I'd like it if on Tuesday they paid my entire shift in supervision cos that's the day the CSM does rosters.
They do this with our backup smokeshop girl on Saturdays. She gets:

10-11.30: operator
11.30-12.30: smokeshop
12.30-2.00: operator
2-3: lunch
3-5: operator
5-6.30: smokeshop

Its so ridiculous!

And tuesdays, if I get left downstairs by myself while rosters are being done, I claim that time at supervisor rates. I've never not been payed it.

Yeah i might try that. The SSO and I are on very good terms.

OK breaking news, it seems I have been promoted to Duty Manager. That is without asking or consulting or even hinting at me at all. Just rang up for next week hours and bang, doing 3-7 on Saturday and Sunday as DM. Don't you have to have special training and alarm numbers and shit for all that shit? And fuck off taking the store keys home with me, i have trouble keeping track of the service keys.

Although I can feel the power trip brewing inside me already...

I wouldn't say any special training is needed, particularly if you are already 2IC. I know that our current 2IC was previously a night duty manager at a 24hr store, and she considered her 2IC role as a promotion.

Alarm Numbers are not hard. They'll just add you to the authorised user sheet (or perhaps not - our DM didn't turn up last sunday so the SSM quickly taught the other SSA alarm numbers and how to lock up).

Other than that I wouldn't be too worried. I'd say it would be pretty uneventful.

Just to clarify, I meant that they will change your current format to three (or perhaps four) registers that run down the side of the service desk. I made it sound like that's what they're like now.

Re: DMing, OK thanks for part reassurance part bursting my bubble. I just realised it also means I will have to be trained in Cash Office procedures as we don't have anyone in Store Services after 10:30 on a weekend, so I suppose they'll have to teach me to do pick ups and give me safe numbers.

okay, somebody is going to have to explain what staggered express lanes, as oppossed to the alternative?

As for DMing, yoddle, i think you would need at least some training

mainly for
-alarms
-opening the safe
-how to do product recalls/withdrawals
-how to handle customer/staff injuries
-nighttime reports
-and what's expected of you (e.g. our DM has to fill milk, do the perishables load, refill produce, face the whole store, print reports and do a pickup if needed)

10:30am? :|

there's express where it's all in a line and it's "next please!" format (staggered)
and then there's express where it's individual lanes and lines.

we cant all work for big stores! same with us, weekend SSA is there for 3 hours, 7-10, it's a stressfull shift, but i used to have it down to a fine art

7-7:05 - count safe, check EFT
7:05-7:10 - organise overnight reports
7:10-7:15 - daily systems check
7:15-7:20 - give drawers/keys to front end
7:20-7:25 - change video tape
7:25-8:00 - daily comms
8:00-9:00 - daily dumps and clearances, DGMS, trading statement, exceptions, empty bulk coin, bundles notes (as much as possible that can be done of that untill 9)
9:00-10:00 - pickup and change orders, only ones for the day!

and god help anybody who got in my way if EFT didnt balance, or there was a discrepancy on the DGMS

what the hell, individual lanes for express, seems to be an awful lot of wasted space for little, if any benefit

Ah thank you! I knew there was more to it. They also seem to spend a lot of time RTCing stock with an RF gun, which I also don't know anything about. I don't know when they are going to teach me all this as i've only got two shifts beforehand, and one's supervision so they can't steal me then.

Aha yes i can relate, I have a feeling that our stores budgets/procedures are very similar, although your store is even smaller than mine.

Does anyone know if the fresh food departments will be getting the hats? Or will we have to buy our own?. I know they are available on the website, but I don't want to by one, if we'll be getting a whole lot of them anyway.
I assume they will send them out once the current ones run out.... but they won't be running out any time soon lol, there's HEAPS around the place.

Haha, we used to have a VCR too. Now it's all digitalised and you watch it on the manager's workstation (and burn DVDs for loss prevention).

Why don't they give you a shift like during the middle of the day you work in grocery or something so you can do a pickup closer to the end of the day? Or you just don't need a pickup anyway?

Duty Manager can do a pickup if absolutely necescary i guess is the reasoning.

edit: lol, dont even have a managers workstation....yet, perhaps getting one on monday, they're (FINALLY) giving us new computers.

Devonport Woollies has the three sets of detached express. I prefer the single queue for express because yesterday I was buying a few things and the express line was moving rather quickly except the lady who was in front of me decided that she'd spread her purchases over four different credit cards.

My coles has a weird combo for express, two connected to service desk and two self-contained (in what I like to call the dungeon or the naughty corner), here's a picture because I'm bored. (Note: the other entrance is to the right of regs 12/13)

Lol, when I made a Woolworths store on the sims, which was a while ago..I made it with staggered express lanes. Then when the refurbs started I also refurbed it in the sims..all pics are on my facebook. But also on babicakez pics. tbh, I do miss staggered express lanes, time went quicker working on there cos you could talk to people.

Actually, having the express staggered out is such a good idea, because people can see who's free. I hate having to yell "next" when there's a big line-up and all four are open

Woohoo to new workstations! We're only getting one, but its at the desk I use in cash office. I'm so excited, because before it was taking me half as long to enter the tills as it was to count them.

And copeys, every week when I was in c/o using that old workstation I mentioned how cheaply they could fix it with some extra ram and a mouse that didn't fail every five seconds. I actually think I asked to IDT a mouse once, the SM laughed at me so hard.
Def 1999 technology :)
