well, you probably won't like any of my suggestions, because, well I'm a chick, and much of my hol in melbourne involved shopping... But here's the list of stuff we did when we went

*go to Luna Park - its shitter than the sydney one, but its still pretty cool. There's a great view from the feris wheel
*shopping - CBD, bridge Road, Ackland street in St Kilda
*Art Gallery, Museum, performing arts centre
*visit all of melbourne's swanky bars in CBD and South Bank
*Aquarium and the zoo
*wander through the beautiful parks and escape the rush of the city
*Go to the markets
*The beach (They're not as good as Syney, but still worth a look)

I love melbourne, am going to live there when I've finished uni. Its the most beautiful city in Australia. Such culture!

There is so much to do! Just go shopping, bum around the city, go through all the little backstreets and fine the botique shops, go to the markets, go to Chapel St and Bridge road (for outlet centres) and Chastone shopping mall. Go to the art gallery and then stroll across to the Royal botanic gardens. Go to St Kilda- it may be covered in needles, but they have great markets and heaps of shops and places to eat, and the old theatre near Luna Park looks like its straight out of the Romeo Juliet set.

There is this adorable coffee shop called Brown Sugar in the city down a little cobbled path- its cheap, warm and so gorgeous! The food is wonderful! There is also a restaurant called 'in the dark' or something similar which is run by the blind society. You order your food, get taken to this pitch-black room, and enjoy your food! Your senses go wild! I had to eat with my fingers because I couldnt coordinate them! And people walk around whispering in your ear, or tickling your neck with a feather. And its so communal- all the diners talk together despite the fact they are all on different tables.

Sigh. I love Melbourne! :D

I hear the nightlife in Melbourne is awesome. So you should check out all the hot spots.

But other than that and shopping, there isn't much you can do. It's the same as Sydney, but the people are more weirdish :p

Oh and don't u mean you're going down to melbourne ;)

Our luna park looked like a hole the last time i checked. It looks really old and run down. But in st kilda there are some really nice food places...

Don't you guys have the same thing in sydney anyway?

Erm, if you want to escape the city, just don't go into the city?

We have some pretty good markets scattered around the place...

Like you said, if you guys have better beaches, why bother going to ours? :p

Bridge road is good!! A whole street of cheap clothes...
I got my formal dress from there and it cost me $15...

I live here and i still get lost in the backstreets :p
They are really cool; there are all sorts of weird and trendy shops there. There are some very unique and cosy little resturants in those streets too...

St Kilda has a great nightlife. There's heaps of pubs and restaurants to troll through. But I've also been told it's seedy. My cousin once described it as "The Kings Cross of Melbourne".

Oh and you can go see the PENGUINS! I have nfi where that is (maybe someone from melb can confirm) but i remember being a kid and going to this acquariam type place and seeing tiny penguins everywhere.

Oh, and when you go to Phillip Island to see the fairy penguins remember to bring warm clothes. Even though it was summer it was still freezing cold because of the wind chill factor.

They have this in Sydney as well, near Hyde Park.
