Alright, tomorrow i'm finally making the swtich from the clutches of windows to the warm bosom of linux. I'm getting 3 flavours of the operating system off my friend, Ubuntu, Mandrake and Fedora Core. I don't know which distro to install, and i don't want to find out via trial and error. Too much time.

So for all those in the know, tell me which one you believe to be the best, and tell me why. Keep in mind that my knowledge of linux, in terms of the console and the commands, is fairly limited at the moment. Thus, i'm a fairly new beginner to the world of linux.

And.....Go!

For you, Kubuntu. It's easy to use, and coming off windows you will appreciate the KDE Desktop enviroment.
Are you with Bigpond? If you like, I can burn Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn and send it to you?
Bigpond customers can download the linux distros at no usage charge.

P+H = $125.00

Seriously though, Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn.

Or just Ubuntu.

It's quicker to install and less bloated than Fedora Core, generally works out of the box. My experience with Mandrake has been limited but it probably would be harder to get support for it due to a smaller user base (that said, linux is generally the same distro to distro...key difference is in package (software) repository systems e.g., apt-get, rpm).

Ubuntu has been geared for the first-time adopter anyway.

That said, linux distros are a bit of a 'hit and miss' thing. Try one, and then move on if you don't like it.

I'm finding Ubuntu to have been good as a desktop OS as well as a server OS (currently running Ubuntu server in CLI).

You'll end up going back to WIndows. DOn't bother. I've tried *nix distros about 12 times over the last 7 years and each time I cant fucking stick with nix. and Yes, I tried Feisty Fawn.

P.S. The best program on Ubuntu = Tilda. AWEOSME.

Just because you're computationally retarded doesn't mean everyone else is.

I'm quite happily running the latest version of Ubuntu and Windows XP all at the same time since ive decided to dual boot my system. I must say Ubuntu is a beginner's edition of Linux. Its geared to those who jz made the jump from Windows but cant be buggered learning all the commands to make a system work. Once u set it up it just works although I must say you gotta install flash, thunderbird and all the audio/video codecs by scratch since ubuntu dusnt install them by default

I would start with Ubuntu and then work my up to Fedora. its built upon the debian system which is supposed to be a very stable and robust system so once you get into all the programming stuff sorted out with Ubuntu, you're on your way to learning debian.

Wrong again.

There are somethings that nix just doesn't have. Eg the lack of support for obscure pieces of hardware such as
brought me back to Windows.

She doesn't know what she's on about.

The best game on Linux is that Alien Arena shite, then Frets on Fire. Go check it out.
