Ostensibly a thread about that, but moreso to let u know that our illustrious Quah is running, does this boy never learn

__________________________________________________________________________

***THIS THREAD IS ABOUT THE ELECTIONS FOR THE UNIVERSITY SENATE. THIS IS ONE OF TWO ELECTIONS CURRENTLY RUNNING. THE OTHER ELECTION IS FOR THE SRC. DETAILS FOR THAT ELECTION CAN BE FOUND IN A DIFFERENT THREAD***
Hi all,

Susan here, hijacking townie (Alex?!)'s thread about the Senate elections.

In an action involving a tremendous waste of paper, tommorow (Tuesday the 5th) the University will mail out ballot papers, envelopes, useless explanations and some more crap to every single undergrad at the Uni (and all the post grads too)

Of the 30,000+ undergrads we have, only about 900 will vote, based on last years figures and my own recollection of them.

So if you too feel bad about the poor trees that are being wasted please either

1) vote
or
2) RECYCLE your paper, don't chuck it out. Please. I asked nicely ok?

Onto the information bit of the thread as opposed to my mad ramblings.

WTF? Yet Another f***in election?

Yeah, another one. And in a move I have not seen before (in all my 2 (almost whole) years at uni) complete with campaigning on behalf of one of the candidates. You can't miss the posters his mug is on (almost) every spare, non-sandstoned surface at uni.

This election is to elect an undergraduate representative to the University Senate, the peak decision making body in the University.

More information on the Senate can be found here.

Right, so whose running this time?

They're names, and statements and photos (when they give them to be submitted) will be found here.

If you cbf clicking the link, they're names and degrees are:

Rose Jackson
Candidate for the combined course Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Economics and Social Sciences
Alastair Lyon
Candidate for the course Bachelor of Applied Science, Nuclear Medicine
Duncan McKay
Candidate for the course Bachelor of Commerce
Stephanie Paton
Candidate for the course Bachelor of Economic and Social Sciences
Andrew Quah
Candidate for the combined course Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music Studies
Wenny Theresia
Candidate for the combined course Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws

How do I vote in this election?

As aforementioned, you'll get a letter in the mail sometime this week.

Anything else I should know?

Sure. Theres plenty of crap to read about the elections.

More information can be found here, here and in this .pdf document

Thats about it.

Oh and try and keep the spam in this thread to a minimum. Cheers m'dears.

Re: Undergrad rep on the Senate

I'm 21, I'm hardly a "boy".

Also, I believe I would be a fantastic Undergrad Rep to the Senate. Since somebody has actually bothered to start a thread dedicated to this, the following is my supporting statement.

With your support for undergraduate representative to the University Senate, it is my pledge to work for the benefit of our student body to raise the important issues, and to provide a clear and confident voice for the student body across the entire university. I am a fourth year Arts/Music Studies student at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and a professional grower, lecturer and author on bonsai. As a student, I divide my time between the Con and the main campus - and at both I see and hear discontent among my classmates, whether it’s the rising price of parking for main campus, the utter lack of parking for the Con, the cost of course materials, the time spent travelling to and from uni, or the subject choices available to us in our degrees. Issues like these faced by most students - and not the concerns of the petty politically-minded activists among us - demand the attention of our University Senate, and so it is my commitment to address these issues, and to speak on the behalf of my fellow undergraduate students at the many campuses of the University of Sydney.

Vote 1 Andrew Quah
Vote 2 Duncan McKay

I didn't start a thread about this because inevitably the arguments will degrade to Falun Gong or the way the Union is funded, neither of which is relevant.

I was going to just leave a mere announcement, and tolerate a hijacking of the SRC thread for the same discussion as rampant discussion of politics in every frikking nook and cranny of the forum usually leads to shitty forum members, which I don't like.

But since we have a thread, you're running, we know that. Thanks

So is Duncan McKay and Stephanie Paton (our very own greeninsanity) as well as the incumbent, Rose and a few more. I'll hijack townies first post at the moment, so that everyone who cares not to have to sift through the 20+ pages of crap can get all the info they need, should they choose to.

Wenny is a candidate for the Socialist/Green bloc. She's an environmentalist, and of her entire bloc I'd say she's the only rational one. Certainly, she's one of two I think most people could actually get along with, and I do respect her for her dedication to her beliefs - but that doesn't mean I'd vote for her.

Oh and you tell a lie Susan, Rose campaigned for the Senate last year, I still have the poster I ripped down of her face in Merewhether Male toilets.

It really wasn't something I wanted to see staring in my face while I was taking a piss.

Oh and I also remember her lecture bashing for the same position.
I concede oh great Brogan.

Good night kiddies. Try and be nice to each other.

Re: Undergraduate Representative to the University Senate

Every lecture I attended today had 2-3 people get up and rant their little hearts out. It made my little brain hurt :(.

I wish those flyers they hand out weren't so detailed. I can't be fucked reading for two minutes. And all that info doesn't stick when I've bothered to read any more than two. I'm a fan of bullet points, clarity and concise messages.

Hear, Hear!

edit: I don't actually support the Coalition government, but I'll support those motions purely because it'll piss off the hippies.

Question about Senate Elections

Why is the voting paper envelope smaller than the actual voting paper?

EDIT: Also, why must my name be written on the envelope? This is like, communism.

Re: Undergraduate Representative to the University Senate

So...Union Council for last semester, SRC for this semester (how's that different to the Union?) and now election of a representative for the student body for the University's governing Senate, correct?
