edit: yeah they had good position, i managed to join the army, rifle club, skinning dead animals club and driving truck club all within a 10m radius. I had to go a bit further to join Contemporary Christian Cult though =(, but it was worth it!

It was next to the Army Reserves tent, but then again it was also very close to the ALP tent.

I think a more fitting on was the gothics being on the outer edges and isolated from the rest of the tents

But if the organisers wanted fun they should've put the coming out tent next to the EU tent. And the Liberals next to the Socialist Alliance.

Ok, well from the very first day at o-week, it was drummed into my by president of the USYD SRC that voluntary student unionism is BAAAAAAAADDDDD to the bone.

But I'm not convinced

What do you guys think? Great idea? the death of unions as we know it? Have no idea what the hell I'm talking about?

share your views on this policy that may very possibly be in effect by the end of this year or next year

I decided to read the handout from the SRC titled "Where does your $38 SA fees go?", or something along those lines. So when i opened it up, it gave me such a wealth of information about how my money helps pay for projects such as pressuring the governments to change their policies on aboriginal rights, environment etc, you know, the usual fare they complain about.

And at the end they summed it all up by saying, "We support programs that is very important to you - equal rights for homosexuals, indigenous rights, anti-racism and environmental destruction"

After reading all that, i still had no idea how my money helps me. I am not queer, nor indigenous, nor a person of ethnic descent, nor disabled, and my area is not suffering from environmental destruction.

So why should i spend my hard earned money supporting people like these, who only benefit a tiny proportion of the student population, whereas they take money from the WHOLE student population. In a capitalistic society, we have the choice of association, but obviously this society ends at the doors of a university.

Though that is a valid question, all these things do affect you. Whether or not you're homosexual doesn't stop the need for homosexual people to have a safe-haven. International students need help when someone thinks they can cheat them, it mightn't affect you, but one of your friends could've been swindled, one of mine was. Disabled services are vital. It's cruel to tell someone who isn't capable of hearing properly, or seeing properly that university isn't for them. A disabled person can still be a world famous academic, why not give them a starting point? As for environmental destruction, it might affect you more directly one day.

While I agree with what the SRC stands for, I don't agree with the waste of money that they actually are. Why subsidise alcohol at all? The more expensive it is, the less people will do it on campus, the less problems (and I've been drunk on campus, I caused a few little problems). When the student needs representation because of problematic lecturers in UOW they have to follow a hierachy, it doesn't include the SRC anymore.

I support VSU because the SRC has abused the priviledges they've got. Having a cut of funding from the student body might force the SRC to get off their backsides and do something. But likely instead of trying, they'll just blame the student body for not paying.
