I'm going to be a SUDS man and I might join some form of political society if I can find one that isn't just some propaganda machine. Suggestions in this regard are welcome!

Everyone needs to join Sutekh...no, really! We got white and nerdy guys galore, oh and beer too, if that floats your boat.

I'm joining:
Tolkien society
Archaeology society
Germ club (German culture society) - maybe
And of course, Sutekh

Where would I find a list of all these societies so I can answer this thread? :)

EDIT: Okay, I'm a dumbshit. It's probably a good idea for me to actually read the initial post rather than just skimming it.

I'm VP of the Liberal Club, so obviously any information in this post will be biased, but:
- If you're pro VSU, and generally believe that the Howard government would do a better job than a Labor government, join the Liberals. We're a good mix of conservatives and classical liberals, so there's always a healthy amount of debate. Events include drinks nights, fortnightly general meetings (where we discuss policy, future events and upcoming campaigns), as well as campaigns. In the case of the latter you can be as involved as you want to be, including running for positions, designing posters, researching lecture bash timetables etc. Don't be concerned about propagandising either, as there are very few members who toe the party line to the letter anyway.
- The ALP Club (i.e. Labor right) are rather small, with only about 5 or 6 people regularly attending their meetings (as far as I've seen). Their stances are generally in line with the federal labor party.
- The Labor Club (Labor left) are by far the largest political grouping on campus, they are a combination of feminists, queers, free education activists, pro unionists etc. Arguably closer to the Greens than the federal ALP.

Cheers WAF, that's reasonably helpful. I don't suppose there are any neutral societies are there? I was considering joining the Labor Club but if it's even close to how you describe it then I think I'll save myself the headache. What's the SRC like as opposed to the Union?

SRC organises casework to help students with centrelink, academic appeals etc, as well as activism (i.e. collectives, protests, postering etc). The union is more focused on service provision, such as food and parties. Neutral societies, I suppose you could try the politics society, I don't know much about them...

-Politics soc
-ALP Club, if I can muster the enthusiasm
-Debating? I was a debater in high school, but I haven't done it for a while, so I'm not sure whether I should go for it or not.
-Archaeology Society
-Gaius Gracchus? If I don't get turned off by the whole 'togas are sexy' thing. Ick.

Any other recommendations? (Also, re politics, is the lot who try to flog the badges about withdrawing all troops from Iraq immediately, Marxism Now, etc etc Socialist Alternative?)
