its a piece of shit

imo if you are gay and cant service and repair your own car, get whatever because its going to cost you lots in the long run in servicing and repairs

if you have half a brain and a toolbox, get something common. spare parts are plentiful and you can do everything yourself for cheap. my friend has 3 Ef falcons, 1 running and 2 spares cars that he got for like $300 each and he has 2 spare parts for almost everything and we can do all servicing and repairs (apart from bottom end engine shit) ourselves.

SO CHEAP

Also you're missing the fact that a commodore at 150,000 km almost certainly has more life left in it than an Alfa at half that,.

I was riding in a 90's model falcon yesterday. The door was about to snap off its hinges. How is it even possible for a door to fall off ever in a million years, who builds a car like that?

riet, i already have a cheap car sitting outside, nissan pintara 1991, so i've already got my first car. Now i want a convertible, and as long as i get one with a good service history, hopefully if its already stood the test of time it wont be too bad, hey?

The Rx5 doesnt isnt too bad, i still prefer the look of the front of the alfa though

Azamakumar, what do you have against alfa's, or all convertibles for that matter?

TBH Alfa's are known for poor build quality and overpriced service/maintenance. They are beautiful cars (to some) and have very delicate handling... but unfortunately for most people, reliability is something more important than aesthetics which is why Toyota still does so well.

Whilst I can't speak for Az, to me convertibles are always an afterthought for car makers... unless you are buying a luxury convertible with a decent engine, chances are all you are doing is paying a huge hefty premium for a cheap car gone topless (e.g. Astra, Focus, the French cars, etc). And that means the car has no substance- i.e. you are paying purely for the convertible look and not for any "manly" performance. Sure, some convertibles have a good base to begin with (e.g. M3/335i Coupe, Cooper S, SLK, etc) but these are not the ones which most people are talking about at our age (unless they have very generous parents).

... but in all seriousness, didn't any of you guys watch Top Gear (or was it Fifth Gear?) which showed the rollover safety in a cheap and cheerful convertible?

I have nothing against alfas. I love em. They're beautiful. About a year ago when buying a car was a reality I was aiming for an alfa 147. Research showed that they're unreliable, and problems were expensive to fix unless you were lucky enough to get it done under warranty. They spend half their time on the road and the other half with a spanner on em.

I'd advise you stay away from convertibles because like seremify said, all the ones in your price range are a complete load of shit. You could probably pick up an old merc or bmw (talking old here) for that price but you'll spend just as much as the going price keeping it on the road. MX-5s were a serious suggestion by me and Riet, now that I think of it an old one might fall into your price range.

As for an alfa, if you must waste your money then pm me your details and I'll come take it off your hands.

Get a 1st gen MX5, such gorgeous cars. Get one made after 1991, or that has already been fixed unless you want to deal with this: Miata Crankshafts

Have you looked at targa tops? Better than a convertible imo, get out in the open air, yet with more security and a marginally more rigid chassis. 300zx and MR2 are great cars that can be had in T-tops.

Expensive Brand = Expensive repairs.

Alfa Romeo + Many recognized problems = Many repairs.

Alfa Romeo + Repairs = A FREAKING HELL OF A LOT OF MONEY in the long run.

(convertible-wise)
MR2 yay.
300zx no.

Although I would avoid CRX but that's out of personal preference.

why no to a 300zx? Whats more fun than a back end that steps out of line every corner, wet or dry?

And they have niggles all the fucking time, as attila has been finding out... and that;s an Aus delivered one. I imagine a jap that's been thrased would be worse.

But srsly, MX-5 is really the only choice for a reasonably cheap convertible.

Edit: And for the record <100,000 on the Alfa just means your going to have to do timing belts and head gasket soon. And that won't be cheap.
