What is a 'Double Major'? (1 Viewer)

...is it:

A) A musical term referring to the simultaneous playing of two major scales;

B) A term used in tertiary education meaning that you do two different majors at once;

C) A term used in tertiary education meaning that you do more than/double than the required amount of units for a major in one subject area, (sacrificing any electives you may have);

D) None of the above.

?

I did a quick search in the Uni - General forum and it seems that it could be either B or C... IS it either, but a bit more involved/developed than that?

USyd Arts Handbook also yields nothing in way of an explanation.

you would normally have the option of doing a double major in a single degree.

say in your b. a. (languages).... instead of just having 1 major in a language, you can take on another major, say in another language (or in another arts area provided that your degree allows this)

I double major means that you do a SINGLE degree, but cover two majors, which will show up on your testamur. The second major contributes to your credit point toal and requires a certain amount of units for it to be awarded.

A double degree is the award of TWO degrees, which will show up on your testamur. The degrees are usually either: synergistic and involve a degree with few free electives, or involve two degrees with a moderate amount of free electives which don't necessarily have a relation to eachother.

Typically an extra year is required for a double degree.

In arts, an example would be: B Arts (History, Politics) You don't have to take more units and it doesn't take longer, you just focus on 2 areas instead of one major and a few unreleated units.

what Slide Rule said, double degree typically can involve up to 3 majors i believe 1 major in the 2 disciplines that relate to your combined degree while the electives can sum up to a third major of your choice.

B, eg in BA at the ANU most students do a double-major and it is possible to do a triple major.

A major is an area of study, a double major simply means having two areas of study.

In Liberal Studies, you have to do a double major; a Science major and an art major. This takes 4 years, compared to a double degree which generally takes 5 years.

yeah im doing Arts and Sciences i have the option to major in two subject areas if i want to, depending how well i balance credit points etc.

Ah k. Thanks everyone for your help! Yer. Cos the BA Lang needs two majors - at least one must be a language and the other, whatever other arts subject for the other, but it never referred it as being a 'double major'...

I'm doing B Teaching/BArts and I'll end up with a double major because of the way that I've chosen my electives... I'll specialise in English and Drama and also Special Ed. just another way to gain qualifications and experience i guess
