Hi, I'm in Year 10 and a new member of this forum, and I am thinking of taking Physics next year, I just wanted to know what level of maths do you think would be wise to take with that.

HSC Physics doesn't really have too much maths involved, as long as you're comfortable with rearranging equations and substituting numbers into equations, you'll be fine. So 2 unit maths should be sufficient.

Do the highest level of maths that you think you are capable of. If you find it too hard you can always go down. On rare occasions you'll be able to go up but usually that's within the first few weeks of year 11.

Physics involves little or no 2U math concepts, unless you consider substitution of variables into formula and use of a calculator as maths.

To be fair, Year 12 Physics mathematics can be done by a General Maths student. So answering the question, you need only General - but HSC-wise, do the best you can.

+1

if you're good at maths(trig and algebra) in Year 10, you don't even need 2u maths to do hsc physics

I know people who did phys with no maths, they did ok, you dont need to do maths for phys, as long as you get year 10 5.3 maths you should be ok, HSC phys doesn't need much maths, gets easier in year 12 also btw

I recommend Maths Extension One, but the course is doable with General.
One or two kids doing General beat me in the preliminary yearly.

In absolutely all honesty, no maths is required at all for the modern HSC physics syllabus. When you hit higher level physics, oh wow that definitely changes!

I think year 10 5.2 maths is fine. I was doing the 5.2/5.3 syllabus but we only did one 5.3 topic.

And what Maths Extension 1 concept is vital to understanding Prelim or HSC Physics?

You've clearly misread what I've written.
I said that I recommend Maths Extension One. This is because I think doing Maths Extension One correlates with being intelligent enough to do Physics as it seems to be an intellectually demanding subject considering majority of the people iin my year that do it fail.

Oh so it's an intelligence thing. I thought it was "You need the topic _____ from MX1 to do well in Physics".

I guess projectile motion would be helpful and mechanics in MX2, but I honestly don't know because I don't do physics, but I can say that at my school the kid coming first does MX1 and the general kids fail.

-Mathematical- concepts from physics (like vector resolution, tension, linear motion and projectiles) are not even comparable to Mechanics (4U).

Re: What level of maths do you reccomend I should to be able to do Yr 11 and 12 physi

Well really, I know for a fact Yr 10 5.3 suffices. I know someone who did no Yr 11 maths and did well in HSC physics.

However most people who do the best in physics tend to be MX1-but I think it's because of the intelligence and how they have a science/maths mind more than the concepts they learn. It prob makes the maths required in physics seem really easy.
