The UN couldn't prevent US and other countries invading Iraq and can't stop Israel from indiscriminately killing Palestinians and placing them under a 1 year siege. So i ask what purpose does the UN have apart from providing aid, there is no need for delegations and meeting of world leaders if it can't do jack fteet. Remove the Veto powers of US and others than the UN might have a reasonable chance of getting somewhere.

Hans Blix: Mr. Il, I was supposed to be allowed to inspect your palace today, but your guards won't let me enter certain areas.

Kim Jong Il: Hans, Hans, Hans! We've been frew this a dozen times. I don't have any weapons of mass destwuction, OK Hans?

Hans Blix: Then let me look around, so I can ease the UN's collective mind. I'm sorry, but the UN must be firm with you. Let me in, or else.

Kim Jong Il: Or else what?

Hans Blix: Or else we will be very angry with you... and we will write you a letter, telling you how angry we are.

the only thing good came out of the UN was the "universal declaration of human rights"

that's it.

They should remove Russia's veto power. It's a relic from a different age.

The UN does have a lot of limits on its power - namely the nonbinding nature of its agreements and the lack of a TRUE world police (america doesnt count) so that it has no actual enforcement or protectary measures. and it gets overridden by the will of the US far too often.

but for all that, the UN does still do a few valuable jobs. Like keep peace, provide aid, and act as a forum of sorts for global discussions.

They should remove France and Britain first.

The un's role is to allow metal bands such as megadet hto base a whole album on its "abominations", specifically the song united abominations

Within striking distance from Ground Zero sits a smoldering
International cauldron, the "United Abominations" as it were
Born to prevent wars, it froze in the face of disaster and
Stood silent while terrorization took hostage the world
In a mire of hypocrisy, the UN ignores sex crimes by its
"blue-helmets", and enables terrorism; so that in the end it's failed
And the UN is where our so-called "friends" get to stab us
In the back, and we pay 22% of their tab to host our enemies
Here at home. Ambassadors from countries, otherwise known
As a catastrophe, enjoy diplomatic immunity living in
Manhattan, while their children are turned into prostitutes
It's a complete and utter disgrace, a blot on the face of
Humanity, and they get away with it.

Poverty in their kitchens, held hostage by oil-for-food
Yet their own plates are full off the fat of their lands
There's no blood on their hands, right Kojo?
They promised to tell the truth, without leaving a fingerprint
They will lose the UN one way or another
The victim, I fear will be us, sisters and brothers

The UN is right; you can't be any more "un"
Than you are right now, the UN is undone
Another mushroom cloud, another smoking gun
The threat is real, the Locust King has come
Don't tell me the truth; I don't like what they've done
Its payback time at the United Abominations

A grave and gathering danger, the decision to attack
Based on secret intelligence it'll take years
I fear to undo the failings in Iraq, Iran, and Korea
You may bury the bodies, but you can't bury the crimes
Only fools stand up and really lay down their arms
No, not me, not when death lasts forever

Man: The UN writes resolution upon resolution.
We really need a new world order.
Woman: There is no order order. I don't believe it
I don't even listen to the talk of this new world order.
Man: They'll never do anything.

NATO invaded Yugoslavia to end ethnic cleansing
There was no UN
The U.S. invaded Afghanistan after 9/11
There was no UN
Saddam Hussein violated 17 UN resolutions
The U.N. was
Asked to join the war in Iraq: The US invaded
There was no U.N.
Libya bombed a discotheque in Berlin killing Americans
There was no U.N.
And Iran funds Hamas and attacked the US in the seventies
There was no UN
Facing War without end, looking into the future
There was no more UN

The UN is there so that powerful nations can join and pretend/feel like they're doing the world some good for once.

Hahaha, you're all talking about the UN as though it's ONLY the Security Council and (possibly) the General Assembly. Granted, though they are the most prominent and, unfortunately dysfunctional, the UN is so much more than just them. Look at UNESCO, and the less visual but organisational role of the: UPU; ITO; ILO among others.
The UN is always going to be flawed at the senior level. How can't it be when most of the worlds leaders think as "Realists"? But, even in its present form it is better than nothing at all.

The UN has been a figurehead for basically as long as its inception. I have always found the concept a little too utopian to succeed.

At the end of the day you are relying on governmental participation when all government's will ultimately do what is best for their country and their people, even if it comes to the detriment of others.

Nothing in international law is effective, because it is all based on consensus, and about half the time (probs more) there is no consensus.

Serves as a forum for anti-Semitism to be expressed without much protest. See UN Durban World Conference on Racism.

As with Schrodinger I didn't read past the "Indiscriminately killing Palestinians" line. :)
