You get used to it! They give you tons of stuff on plagarising and they are pretty good at being lenient first semester to first years.... after that look out! Uni is much easier than HSC! Uni is like you learn what you want to learn, you study what you want to study. Socialise when you want. You're your own master. Everything is decided by you!

imagine doing the HSC for at least 3 yrs (but harder).
lol I don't think it'll be like "doing the HSC" again. After all, we're in Uni - we made it. :)
Isn't Uni just full of assignments and exams we have to do?
And we only have to pass Credit or something...that's what I've heard from uni students...

Ps get degrees, but in some cases there is a need for a higher level of achievement (e.g., advanced units, pre-honours units, etc.), but that's to be expected.

i agree that Uni is not like "doing the HSC" again. I've been told that uni is like giving you the opportunity to 'touch' different subject areas. And it is up to you which subject you choose to do further study after finishing your degree. This would lead to specialised job opportunities in future.
It's true that we only have to pass to avoid money wastage and repeating. To impress employers, i think it's better to strive for distinctions.

How easy or hard is it to get Distinctions and High Distinctions?

This is probably a dumb question...

You will have to work that out for yourself... We are all different, after all.

i dont mean to sound all childish but im sorta childish. so do all the students at uni just concentrate and study and learn stuff (i know that is the point of uni) or is it a bit like highschool. like also having a bit of fun inclass with your friends whilst learning at the same time.

i was excited about going to uni and this thread is beginning to stress me out. like uni is harder than the hsc. but the thing is uni takes at least 3yrs, wouldnt u go crazy at the end. imagine doing the HSC for at least 3 yrs (but harder).

and thanks to all the uni students for answering all our questions.

I am probably the most childish member of my group and im surviving fine at uni... sure muck around in your classes and whatever... but be mature about it and know when to stop... like have a joke and whatever.. but it doesnt last the whole class like it did in high school, it happens, you laugh, then continue...

excepting of course linguistics lectures, where the laughter continues throughout the lecture at stupid idiotic shiny things designed to attract the attention of bored students such as myself...

Uni is easier than the HSC for one simple reason - You only do the subjects you choose, and you aren't forced to do stupid shit that you don't like or aren't good at like english.

At uni, what you have to worry about is all the stuff about plaguarism. There's no copyright laws. You're free to tape your lecturers.
That's actually not true. It's actually illegal to tape lectures without the prior consent of the lecturer (We were told this in a commercial law lecture)

However, I doubt any lecturer really cares.

Take a pen and a piece of paper if you are feeling really motivated.... I usually take nothing with me now lol!!!! I've been in classes where everyone is asking everyone else if they have a pen that they can borrow lol.

Can I ask a Q about taping lectures:

Will a standard tape recorder do it? I mean, how close would you actually have to sit to the lecturer for it to record the voice? (I'm thinking way too close, or am I wrong?)

go to your lecturer before the he starts and ask him for permission to tape his lec.
you should put it on the desk where te lecturer stands behind.
(just put it near the lecturer like on his desk, dont hold it with you the whole time)

IMO, uni is more stressful than high school. You have to pass all ur units, otherwise you have to repeat them and thats an extra financial burden. Things are covered at a much faster pace. Basically uni is like a HSC course crammed into a 14 week semester. You have stuvac and 2 weeks of exams at the end of the semester. They are more strict on assignments, and grading is much harder. It may seem like its laid back and stuff, but yeah you have to do the work.

i agree with u :)

If u learn (copy down lecture notes and listen to them) and do ur homework, and understand whats going on u are sure to get at least Distinction. But if ur lazy like me, and try to catch up ur homework and missed out stuff 10 weeks later, the best you can get is prolly a credit. it also depends on the difficulty of the subject.
Also, 50% or more of the mark depends on your finals. If you fuck up your final, a second chance is given called supplementary exams. If u pass this, the highest mark u can get is "pass", regardless of what you got in the assessments.

About lectures themselves: Most ppl cant be fucked to attend lectures because what the lecturers do could be called 'ranting". Most of the time they tell u useless stuff thats of no help. But, if u listen to the rant, ur most liekly to perform better than those that skip out on the lecture.

You are allowed to talk and have fun with ur friends, but if the noise level gets too loud, the lectures stop dictating their stuff for several minutes and wait for everyone to calm down.

Lecture rooms are often very cold. Bring a jumper with you, or else you;ll really regret it!!

depending on the course, instution etc.. some courses dont have final exams.. everything is through assessment... some courses only make up 30% of the final mark etc...
