i was reading Young Writer's Showcase and it was so freakn hard. the students responses are either full of genius vocab or really philosophical ideas... to gain a decent mark what is the quality that u should b aiming for??

for those who do it, can u tell me what's it like and how much effort needs to be put into it?

fanx fanx

It's just like all HSC subjects though - if you've got the ability, there's no reason why you can't do the course. Just don't get behind and you'll be fine

yeah, I agree with Enlightened One, the king of bullshit... LOL

.... whatever you do, DON'T leave it to the last minute.... oh, and make sure you have backup copies or your work saved everywhere, right from the moment you start... floppy disks, your computer, your mum/dad's work computer, your little brother's computer... your dog's computer :D everywhere you can. Even save a copy into the 'drafts' folder of your hotmail account.

ext2 is great fun, as long as you have
1) extensive english and literature knowledge
2) self motivation
3) the abilty to complete work on your own
4) good research skills
5) a love of writing!!

there's probably heaps more i should add, cept im majorly busy at the moment as our major work is due TOMORO!!! argh!!!!

so sorry buddy, i'd love to elaborate more on this, but I will later...

:D

This course rocks and the Showcase is full of shit. :D

I swear, the Showcase bores me to death with all the postmodern, trying to imply deeper meaning that either isn't there or is unimportant... and all the reflection statements go on about how great they are.

But that's just coming from a frustrated student who thinks the short story option should actually include a story.

This course rocks. Do it.

A note about the showcase and any finished MW's:

What you see now is the result of at least 6 months' work, and LOTS of drafts, re-drafts, and more re-drafts. They've mostly all been polished till they shine. Most of their ideas (or mine at least) were pathetic to start out with, but it does get better :D

If you like the idea of a subject that has no external exam and is a lot more creative, then eng ext 2 may be the thing for you :) Particularly if you like, or are good at english.

I've loved this year. EE2 is my absolute favourite subject, hands down. It's possibly the only subject I'll - willingly - work at in my spare time. Crazy huh?

I should think that most EE2 MW's get a decent mark. Like, you do the subject because you want to - you'd have to have some really funny things going on if you got a really bad mark for something you tried your best in. And if you do it, you will try hard - believe me :)

- Alot of the mw's in the showcase are complete shit. See the website in the 2004 showcase, me and my friends had a good chuckle at it.

- Mine was a website on cult movies. So it doesn't always have to be deep-per se, as long as your work isn't completely frivilrous.

- Decent marks are relative. What do you think is a decent mark? 40+, 45+. 49?

Oh and I finished most of mine in the last few days (though I had all the research done and planned everything I wanted to do) so it isn't to hard to do, even at the last minute.

*shrugs*

People tend to over-rate extension 2. It isn't as hard as most seem to think, as long as you put a bit of effort in.

Piss off. :p

Those are just the people who think they're oh-so-intelligent/intellectual/depressed/great. As was said above, Showcase is shit.

As someone who's written philosophical-prose (kinda) I suppose I should probably defend it, even though I agree that alot of it is shithouse. I wrote it "post-modern" style because I thought I could best get my point across that way, and I liked the idea of making people think to understand it, but let me be clear - there WAS a point to my work, it wasn't just a collection of bullshit that I strung together and called postmodern. So you shouldn't just label everything that you have to think about as wanna-be intellectual/postmodern/depressed, although I've found alot of works about depression/suicide etc. which is incredibly funny in a stereotypical way

so what should be used? because atm, my friend and me at skool.. doing ext.1.. he seems to have the biggest vocab like ever.. he's like a living dictionary.. :D

but when we do creative writing.. i always beat him by ONE mark :D~ teacher says that his writing is too complex..

philosophical prose or understandable better? ^^

I can accept that. When talking about postmodernism, I am aware that there are many good postmodern works out there, however I am usually referring to those who misuse the style or use it as an excuse for writing absolute crap. And the depressing, I'm so smart yet tragic works are just annoying. They become less funny the more you see.

There's a difference between a philosophical story and philosophical bullshit... If you want to explore some aspect of life/society/religion whatever, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to do it without a big vocabulary. In fact, alot of the time you'll find that people you use the big words are just covering up a lack of understanding/complexity in their story.

And the markers love philosophical crap, so if you can do it, I would if I were you.

If you can do it effectively, go for it by all means.

But I don't see the point of writing in a style I don't like because markers tend to like it. If there is an unfair or obvious bias towards one genre or style, they should eliminate the short story option and call it "philosiphy" or whatever.

Again, though, I don't have any problem with people who do it. Just people who misuse it in an attempt to sound smarter than they are or whatever. You know what I mean.
