are you sure that's a good idea? markers get very tired of the angst stories.

- speaking from experience, it's a better idea if you just practice writing creative pieces and have a whole bunch of ideas floating around in your head rather than going in with a definate plan. you might get a question that suits one of the pieces you've already written (like i did last year) or you might be able to adapt a couple of ideas. but they can - and have in the past - given direction for what they want you to write about: either giving quotes and saying to write on the theme of the journey form the quote, or asking you to base a piece on one of thes stimulus texts etc. so just don't be too 'iron-clad' about what you're going to write

decide when i see the question :)

nah i dont find creative that difficult, i'll just borrow from something i've already written and make journey fit into it somehow.

i did that for trials, used a motif to show journey and put it into a piece i'd already been writing. worked fine.

i think creative will be hard- so thats gonna be the last thing i do in the AOS exam. Id kill if it wasnt a narrative, then all these story plans will go to waste :(. Please...no feature articles either !!:(

no, nothing too emotional
They say it takes a really skilled, professional writer to make such
issues seem real and un-cliched... so unless you've got tickets on yourself
being a brilliant writer I'd stay away from the completely emotional topics

dont worry, it's only one teacher that said that
i shouldnt generalise like that...

plus if its still a good story, using sophisticated language and
techniques you cant go wrong, (unless of course its cliched)

Pfft.

Go for emotions. It's not *that* hard to do it well. I can imagine most people pick something emo to write about, so if you're a strong writer and write on similar grounds the comparison will bring your marks up.

what have other teachers said about emo creatives?

The main reason im not doing an emotional one is cause i'd get too
sidetracked by plot and description, so i wouldnt be able to discuss
the actualy journey that has occurred, but then again i suck at
creatives...

I've heard that many can be too cliched, ultimately becoming very uneffective. But, it's easy to consciously steer clear of cliches. Get yourself a relatively original plotline, a few of your own effective images and you're fine. Also, different teachers have way different views - some love the emo, some think it's uninspired. They're similarly polarised on my pomo stuff.

However, I wrote quite an emotional piece for the trials and scored a 15/15. A friend did similar and pulled a 14. (These are marked by a HSC marker too). So I see no real danger to it, just make sure you keep your writing restrained and talking on the concept of journeys.

what does everyone think about subtlety?
I think sometimes going too subtle you could
lose the marker in how it relates to a journey...
but then again, being blatant could lose you
marks... or is that a lie?

Make it subtle, but not too subtle. Never blatant (IMO), otherwise you distract your marker too much.

there's a difference between writing with emotion to convey emotion and writing on an 'emotional topic'. the first is what we want to see, it's the second that's dicy, difficult to do well and, quite frankly, very unoriginal

We're not allowed to talk about rape
We're not allowed to talk about suicide
We're not allowed to talk about angst
We're not allowed to talk about emotional stuff
We're not allowed to talk about love
We're not supposed to do stuff with too much dialogue
We're not supposed to do poetry
We're not supposed to use cliche'd ideas

I'm going to write a story about a girl who gets raped and then suicides, angering her parents...emotional stuff happens at the funeral and the husband leaves the wife for a new love. They then have a 20 minute conversation where the wife discusses poetry. Then the girl wakes up and it was all a dream.

Suck on that english markers.
