I'm definitely doing a Engineering/Commerce degree at UNSW but I dont know what to major in the Commerce part. Seeing that I'm decent at maths I'm considering Actuarial Studies or Finance.

Also
Is Actuarial Studies really that hard? (I've heard some nasty stuff about it)
Does Finance have a lot of math? or is it more essay writing.

Actuarial studies is not that hard. It just takes time and consistent effort to grasp concepts. If you can handle engineering maths, you can handle actuarial maths.

Why do both engineering and actuarial? They are non related and in the end you only can choose to be an engineer or an actuary (Although you will have excellent quantitative skill).

Protip: The nasty things you hear are usually from people who failed/didnt do well.

I'm majoring in Finance (and International Business). First year finance courses weren't too difficult, pretty much just a bunch of formulas to memorise. I've heard it gets quite a bit harder in later years though. With your mathematics grades you will be able to handle Finance just fine. Can't help you with actuarial.

Answer depends on what your focus is: Engineering or Commerce?
If Comm, then why are you doing Engineering? Just do plain Comm and have two majors.
If Engineering, then choose a Comm major which will compliment you Engineering career. Majors which focus upon the basics of running a business (e.g. Accounting, Business Law, Business Economics etc) would be best, in case you ever find yourself in a management position at an engineering firm and have to devote some time to actually running the buisness. Managament major is also a possibility, but I've always been under the impression that management skills aren't something that can be taught, only learnt through experience or natural ability. Depending what type of Engineering, you could also do Marketing, but that and HR can easily be outsourced.

Right, so do a Comm major which you think will best compliment your Engineering career.

if you are doing engineering commerce at unsw you shouldnt even have to choose your electives till like 3rd year

im doing engineering commerce at unsw, the first two semesters are all engineering subjects ( math , physics and few more depending on what engineering you want to specialise in e.g. civil, electrical etc ). Then in third semester you will do one commerce subject ( most likely ) and three engineering subjects. Then in fourth semester you do 4 commerce subjects, and you have to do 6 complusory commerce subjects ( if you have done engineering maths ) or 8 complusory commerce subjects if you havent done the maths ( in total before you pick electives )

so you dont even need to worry about any of it for atleast another two years
