I know this sounds ridiculous but I dont have much idea on my major..I'm 2nd yr B Science..
nothing interests me that much to make me want to do it or not do it. But i have a list of majors which perhaps someone might know which one has more jobs or is more 'fun' to do?

physiology/pharmacology
molecular biology
genetics
biotech
microbiology/immunology
and some minors -

science communications
pathology

are minors better than have a 2nd major?

hmmm, by the beginning of the second year, most people would have figured out what they want to major in within their degrees. Are you sure you want a career in science?

My advice is, since you have narrowed your potential majors to about 5 areas of interests, you can do courses starts with BIOC, MICR, BIOS, BIOT which will cover all of the prerequisites of those 5 majors that you have mentioned. Then in year three, you can decide what you want to go into further.

There is no advantage of taking a minor over a major, or vice versa. if you want to minor instead of a second major, it will allow you to pick more subjects for your first major (which is what you really really wants to you) and maybe 2 subjects in minor , in which you have a side interest to. However if you have strong interest in BOTH of these areas, then you do 2 majors, inevitably, you will do less subjects in each of your majors, compared to a single major. But the decision is yours.

if you do all the requirements for molecular biology you can do pretty much what ever the fuck you want out of those majors you listed, and its the strongest major in science you can do in science at new south aside from nanotechnology, if you do honours youll probably be able to beat the snot out of most med sci grads at most jobs in the biomed field with more freedom to specialise in what you want and not having to waste time with life courses and retarded anatomy, majors and minors dont matter much at unsw in sicence degrees cos they only put one major on your testamur anyway unless you do a combined degree, and unless you really like it theres little to no point in doing phisiology,

also enrol in the advanced bioc and genetics courses fundamentalz is for people who arent going on to major in the bio sci's

biotech i dont think youll be able to major in if u didnt do any biot in first year,

Biotechnology is one of the biggest and most important industries in the world. It is also very synergistic with the nanotechnology industry, which will eventually be THE biggest industry in the world.

Hint hint - biotechnology.

EDIT: Just realised you want a double major with pharmacology. In which case you probably want to go into DDD (drug design and development), right? In which case, biotech would be very synergistic with it.

:worried:

aahhh...well drugs could be fun. as long as anything I do doesnt involve complex maths!! eeekk I mean I dont have to worry right?
biotech does not = maths...

bleh bleh..BIOC,PHPH and MICR gives me a crappy timetable

oh by the way I need to make up 6UOC can I do a first year course? ie BIOT cos i havent taken it..or is it a waste of time?

You cannot do more than 48 uoc of first year courses.

And by the way, you're only a second year student, why don't you decide which major at the end of your second year to see whether you got higher marks in genetics subjects or biotech subjects...

And if you haven't taken BIOT1011 how do you expect to major in biotech?? You should have picked it in year 1...

hmmm..true but it was specified that for a biotech major you need 6UOC from either BIOS or BIOT. and BIOS was what I went for..

I read up in the handbook and you dont need any BIOT course til 3rd year..so weird! but I guess it concentrates on major areas of biological/chemical science anyway.

yeah, but it doesn't say you can't do both :D. you should have done both. Doesn't matter, third year BIOT courses don't have BIOT1011 as a prerequisites, so just pick BIOC2101 and BIOC2201 and you'll be fine majoring in biotech! :)

I do Biotechnology at QUT, I enjoy it.....so is it similar to molecular biology? if i take biotechnology at 1st year, is it possible for me transfer to Medical science @ second year in UNSW, what is GPA requirement?

Well since you're from a different uni, you will probably need a Distinction Average to get in. If you're already in a science degree in UNSW, some people can get away with a Pass average, provided that they have no competition, like this year...
