ok so i want to do advertising/marketing when i finish at school and i was wondering if anyone cold please tell me what is the best coarse for this career path and also wat is the best uni to study this at?!?!?! theres soo many to choose from and im struggling to decide which one to go to???

please help me!!!!

If you want to do advertising, than aim for UTS's B. Arts in Communication (Public Communication)...you then choose either the public relations or advertising stream. It's got a very good rep with the industry and is very practical. The UAI needed is around 92-93. If that's out of your range than go for B. Advertising (or there's also B.Advertising/B Marketing) at Charles Sturt, which is also very well regarded. The application process for that course is lengthy, requires submission of essays, questionnaire and interview. They also require a UAI of at least 70.

With marketing, it's something you need to explore practically. That is, you can't expect to graduate from a marketing degree and land a great job because you need some practical skills/personal qualities for many marketing related jobs. Hence, marketing degrees from uni to uni are all slightly different and all provide the fundamental academic foundations to prepare you for practical applications....but I can't say theres any one particular course that stands out. Try your best to find work experience or even a job in this industry, now. You will need to get a general idea of the diverse range of career prospects in marketing and advertising...then it will be much easier to determine the course you want to do.

Hehe, btw I'm doing Arts/Commerce at Sydney Uni. I chose the double degree because I really want a well-rounded education. If you want something more general then maybe go for B.Business at UTS or something.

Hi there. I do a Bachelor of Arts (Communications - Advertising) / Bachelor of Business (Marketing) at Charles Sturt University in bathurst. I can't say I put a lot of thought into the whole thing, I just sort of ended up here by fluke. I knew CSU had a great reputation in the communications industry, but I didn't know just how good until I got here. The degrees at CSU tend to be more vocational and the graduates have more real experience than those from other institutions - there's an advertising agency on campus run by students and staff. The advertising faculty here has won the international advertising industry award for 3 of the 6 years it's been running which is pretty amazing for a country NSW uni... There are also tonnes of opportunities for work experience and internships both domestically and internationally. I'm one term into my degree and I'm liking it. Plus living on campus kicks ass. I can vouch for the excellence of the current marketing major offered by USYD. A little known fact is that you really don't need much of an advertising degree to get into the industry (this is coming from speaking to professionals). This is why I am a firm believer in the opportunities that the USYD marketing major will provide. It is very broad and covers everything in the industry. Subjects include:
Marketing Principles
Marketing Research
Consumer behaviour (relevant for everything marketing/advertising)
Advertising
Public Relations
brand Management
Marketing strategy (very practical, simulation-based: good to finish the degree with)
International marketing
+ more!
With such a broad range of areas you study, it's very easy getting a job.
Although, I do think that the CSU course would be excellent and more specific, you would have to live in Bathurst.


Asylum: I know a girl who got into Commerce (Liberal Studies) [so would've gotten a 97.6+UAI]. She failed her first essay at uni for Industrial Relations (a subject impossible to fail). After much persuasion she showed it to me. I wish I had copied it - it was gold. No, platinum.

This is what fucking shits me. The UAI is not a fair way to judge entry.
I didnt do well in my HSC year. I had a few problems along the way.
Because of this I cant get into University (easily), and instead people who cant hold an intelligent conversation with a brick wall, get places in the course their mummy and daddy wanted them to get.

Um, thats not really how it works - Public Communications is exactly that, there are no separate PR or Advertising streams, you do have advertising subjects though. You can however do both advertising and marketing as majors in the BBus at UTS.

i got confused when u said there are no streams. I was about to do this degree so I remember doing heaps of research about it. I know its the same degree, but basically u choose to specialise in either public relations or advertising. Is that it?

Sort of, its just that you can choose to do more subjects in one than the other. Like say in my Communications degree, I can choose to do more units on screenwriting than prose. In all practicality its not that big of a divide as its still from your proffessional strand(Pub Com in this case) in the end.

i heard that UTS is pretty shit cos not only do you need to get about 100 percent you also dont get any hands on experience (and it is not even a specific advertising degree)...

any more suggestions????

CSU; Yep they have Kajulu Communications (I think thats what its called). They won this cool international student advertsing competition (competing against international unis from USA, Uk etc) several years in a row now. It is a very practical course. I went down to Bathurst for a campus tour and they just upgraded some of their facilities for communications courses, so thats pretty sweet.

UTS; erm, my careers advisor really pushed me to do this course. I assume u're refering to the Public Communications course? Or B. Business? You should probably get more info on this one because it has a good rep and is practical. From what I remember, you do get hands on experience at some stage in this course.
What do mean "you need to get about 100 percent"? In terms of UAI, its 92-93. Its a reflection of the popularity and demand for this course.
