So you want to do 15 more years (conservative estimate based on full-time attendence) of uni just for a laugh, but then decide to knuckle down and get an MBA, change your career path from a teacher to a businessman and earn some real money? By this time, you'll have three doctorates, three masters, a bachelor's, and a diploma?
Sure why not? You need to understand that 15 years estimate is really 5 if you know what you are doing so it's not that long a time period.

Who says I am not also a businessman at the moment? I find restricting people to one stereotype is often useless, yes I teach but I don't find myself at work 8-4 every day, my attendance is flexible and leaves a lot of time for other ventures outside of teaching which keep me sane to some degree

At TAFE we have many mature age students who work full time and attend a few part time classes to up their skill level in various fields. Some people come in and do carpentry/welding/automotive for a bit of a change or to learn how to fix things. Other students do computing one day a week for a bit of socialising and to hopefully jump up in the salary scale at their workplace. I choose to do uni courses because I find them an interesting challenge at the moment. There's a philosophy called "lifelong learning" and I would hate to think that most people once out of uni and in a full time job will simply stick to that job and hope to move up the ladder without further education of some form. Your Bachelors will only get you so far.

An MBA does not mean you *have* to become an entrepreneur or businessman, often an MBA helps you in getting higher up in the management structure, while the money where I am atm is not bad it is better once you get into the promotional scale. There are many jobs in education requiring managerial quals as well as educational quals.

I guess I didn't choose my degree so much as I chose the uni I was to do the degree at.

I had my heart set on a B Ed (Primary) for ages, so it was really only a matter of choosing where to do it.

I chose ACU because of its good reputation for education courses, small class sizes, small campus, and the prac. I've done three weeks of prac and I know I'm in the right course!

Today was an indication of how much I value ACU's small classes. I had asked a lecturer about a maths assignment and he was only too happy to help me. Over the weekend, he searched for a paper he said would help and remembered that I was coming to see him today.

While waiting for him at his office, another lecturer (my English lecturer and tutor) came past and stopped to have a chat. They make the effort to get to know your name, too! Less can be said about most other uni lecturers!!

I love ACU :D :p

I would respectfully disagree with you on that last point. I go to a 'big' uni and I've yet to have a lecturer or tutor who hasn't remembered me by name or hasn't been openly willing to go out of their way to help one of their students. These are classes with anywhere from 50-200 people.

You don't say?

I chose the degree I'm doing because I found the elitist pencil-dick compsc student attitude appealing (so I'm an elitist pencil-dick compsc student). I chose the Arts degree because I wanted to do more CompSc but couldn't if I was majoring in Japanese. As for Arts after Japanese? I've got mathematics on plan.

simple question, what made you decide to do what you are doing? are you really certain that what you are studying will lead you into what you want to do in life?
just asking as i chose to study a bachelor of commerce and have now realised that it is totally not for me. I'm thinking about trasnferring into a bachelor of nutrition and dietetics - something completely different! When i think back to last year and why i chose commerce i have no idea... i was so confused to have to decide which direction my life would take, and i still have no idea....
cheers

Its always hard to know exactly what you want to do at university... are you going to change courses? I chose a bachelor of science degree because of my fondness for science.
I have a flair for chemistry and enjoy my other subjects too. I love working in laboratories! I am certain that I'm going to be a scientist... I could not see myself doing anything else.

who the fuck would want to do that tho
People who spell though as "tho" obviously aren't heading for politics.

I'd say they were heading for Centrelink.

Ka-ching?

I chose my degrees and respective majors because I enjoy them, I fell into the trap of doing degrees because I had the marks to gain entry and they seemed 'cool'... but then I just got to the stage where I realised it's better to be doing something you enjoy and have an interest in.

That's probably why so many people do Commerce/Pharmacy/Medical Science/Architecture/Engineering instead of program that they actually enjoy (not programs that parents blackmail them into doing or programs that gaurantee lots of money and women upon graduation.)

Then again, probably not.
Exactly, I was a Pysch/Law student before I realised that I detested both degrees... but now I've found something I like... after 4 degree changes and 12 major changes though.

I did engineering studies in the HSC.

Realised it was in my blood and what my life revolves around.

And now I'm halfway through good old Civil Engineering.

Yeah, a large part was to do with our teacher too. He was really passionate about it and even though we were at a really poor school we always had a band 6 engineering student.

yeah, cos unless you're doing something liek visual arts or music, you have no passion for what you're doing and you're just in a line up of mindless drones in the university system
