In no particular order:

1. I read to destress. I find that if ever I'm feeling like there is too much, I just pick up a book to read and it all falls into place. Just realising that I have time to escape and have fun in a book makes everything alright...

2. I read when I'm bored. For example, on buses/trains, in Biology lessons, before bed, after school, while eating cereal...It distracts your brain from thinking about boring stuff, and fills in your time nicely so you don't really feel like you're wasting your time.

3. I read for entertainment. This is completely self-explanatory.

4. I read to expand my mental horizons. This is where the books that don't come under the first three categories come in - classics, non-fiction, harder books, I guess. I don't read nearly as many of these, but I remember them a lot more because I have to think about them and whatever the issues are.

5. I read so I can say I've read more than any of my friends. Seriously, I have a couple of people in my circle who are manic readers...it is very hard catching up to them, but I try :)

I read because its an escape from the stresses of every day life. It gives me a chance to wind down and get emmersed in the world the authors create. And i do it because i thoroughly enjoy it. I feel sorry for people who dont read. I dont understand how someone can hate reading!!! i go through 2 books a week lol

I also just love books and appreciate the effort that goes into each and every one!!:)

There are many reasons to why I read.

1. For pure pleasure.
2. To escape the duties of life.
3. To improve my diction in essay writing.
4. To fall asleep.
5. To enlarge my intellectual penis (or should I say clitoris? ;) )

I read to:

a) educate myself - newspapers, journals
b) entertain myself - sappy sad stories of love and loss, crime thrillers...
c) to dip into history and read what many people before me have enjoyed to see if I will like it - classics / literature

Lol. I agree that intellectualism has a strong erotic component in it. Kudos for the comment.
I once read somewhere that reading is like a warm hug when you're feeling down. I dig that ( with fiction mainly). I like non-fiction because you learn about how the world works, and it expands your knowledge
