i lend all my books to my friends...they treasure them because they know how much they mean to me, yeah they might keep them for months (they dont read nearly as quick as me) but they always come back exactly the same was when i lent the book to them.

but in the end its totally you choice

Hell no!!!
You'd expect your friends to look after them...but seriously, my books come back looking like they're from the garbage dump....

No. Well it depends on the book, really.
I once lent my friend my cheap 1972 edition of 1984 that was falling to bits anyway (I picked it up for 50c at the secondhand bookshop), and if it gets wrecked its no problem coz it is practically dead now.
But my 2000, penguin edition with introduction and notes on the text that I paid over $20 for?
When hell freezes over.

I always want my mates to read my favourite books and then regret it when I dont get them back for months.. a while ago one of my friends asked if she could borrow a book- i was like sure and gave it for her- then i find out its for her cousin or one or HER friends from another school! like wtf?! plus its one of my best books and six weeks on.. no book. grr. and she has one of my DVD's. for the past several months. hmf.

So basically no more. (must learn to say no!)

Only family and 3 of my mates. Girlfriends don't get to touch my books.

I just don't understand how people can ruin books. When I'm reading, I sit down in a nicely lit area, maybe with a cup of water and turn pages.

And the people who ruin the spine, and dog ear the pages - have some respect and keep things in a nice condition, goddamn it.

I wouldn't let them borrow my top 3 favourite books on my shelf but I would let them borrow my other books under certain conditions:
- Don't dog ear the pages. USE A BOOKMARK!
- Keep the cover in mint condition.
- No food and water near the book.

I love my books when they are in perfect condition.

No, I love my books in perfect condition as well.
Can't wait to have accumulated enough books to place in special room in my house and name it "The Library."

Naw, I wouldn't.
Last time I did it was apparently torrential raining and the book became a warped, peeling mess. AND they didn't pay for a new one, or apologise.

RIP Deltora Quest. :(

No. Never. I want my books in fantastic condition. I have a pet hate seeing people either reading crap books or not taking any care with exceptional texts.

I love lending my books to friends. I want them to enjoy the experience that i have had.
I would appreciate it if they came back in mint condition, though i know that wont happen, but i would like them back in good condition, so they are readable for next time lol

But in the end, they are books, which are meant to be read. Better being used than sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

so would you? say it's your most precious books and you been raving about it to your friend and then they ask you if they could borrow it, would you let them borrow it? we are talking about one of those book that you like so much that you dont think you can let anyone touch but want them to read?

how bout a person who is not your friend but you know?

well, one person asked me if they could borrow one of my book collection and im hesistating whether i shud lend it to her to read? we are not really friend-friend, just someone i know from school and hardly see each other. im afraid that she wont return. so discuss
maybe. i guess i would end up lending her a book, providing that she has a trustworthy reputation... plus, you may end up with a new friend! :D

i would be more happy to lend a book to her if she was a good friend of mine's... would be easier to get it back in that case.

only with the knowlege that I'm unlikely to get it back.

I do have one friend I regularly trade with, and I know she'll give them back.

But all other books I've lent i've never gotten back. So i still lend, but only if i'm prepared to lose the book forever / have to buy another copy.

okay, so i skimmed through this thread and most people have answered 'no'.
my goodness!
the books in my collection are mostly from second-hand bookstores in the first place...but even with a brand new mint condition book that i LOVED reading, i would definitely lend it to a friend!
plus the thing i love about second-hand books is that they've been so well loved and read and experienced and enjoyed. you find notes and scribbles and memories embedded into them.

besides, i hate reading a good book and then not being able to talk to anybody about it afterwards. you get a whole new perspective on things. and good books are meant to be shared! it'd be silly to keep all that knowledge to yourself and letting it die away, one brain cell at a time. it's much more stimulation sharing books, sharing ideas, sharing experiences.

that's my opinion anyway.

but i'd love to one day start sort of a chinese-whispers...but with a book. one person reads it, scribbles in it, the parts they hated/loved etc, and then passing it on...and seeing if it eventually comes back, full of memories :)
or maybe i'm just too idealistic that way.

Offtopic, but I wish I saved up 55$ for the hardcover of War and Peace than spend 17$ on a paperback cover. Goddammit.
