Personally I think that suicide is always a tragedy, but I will conceed that it is impossible for me to be objective on this subject as I've had clinical depression for the past few years.

While I respect everyone's right to an opinion, I think its important to realise the effect statements such as "suicide is a cowards way out" can be very damaging and even dangerous. When I was at my absolute lowest and was often contemplating suicide, hearing people say that suicide is cowardly and selfish just made me feel even more isolated and misunderstood, and at times made my desire to kill myself stronger. Again, I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinions on the subject, but I urge you to be very careful about what you say because you don't know what sort of damage you could do.

People who are depressed and suicidal are ill and are often unable to think clearly. What might seem selfish or cowardly from your point of view could make perfect sense in the mind of a depressed person.

If anyone reading this is feeling depressed or suicidal you should seek help straight away. There is always someone you can talk to, and if you'd rather not talk to friends or family you can always call lifeline (on 13 11 14) or visit websites such as www.beyondblue.org.au

there is entire thread on this - but it might be locked lol - but in that thread i think it deals with euthanasia but there was lot of discussion of sucide in there brings a lot of the points for both sides.

anways i think its both a tragedy and selfish
tragedy because the person's family loses somone that may be valuable to them
selfish because the person who committed suicide was not considerate of what his/her actions might affect his family and those related to him. its simple.

Actually its not at all simple. If someone reaches a point where they feel suicide is the only option, then that is a tragedy. Losing a friend or family member to suicide is also a tragedy. You can't accuse people who attempt/commit suicide of being selfish because they obviously are unable to think clearly. Depression distorts thinking patterns and congnitive abilities. I can tell you from first hand experience that when you are so depressed that you are contemplating suicide, its really hard to think of anything other than your pain. This isn't due to selfishness, its because depression fucks up your brain chemicals. Also, depressed people often feel worthless or that they are a burden to those around them so in their minds killing themselves would benefit those around them. Obviously this is never true, but depression doesn't promote realistic thinking.

The issue of suicide may be a lot of things, but its never simple.

Actual, indepth and serious suicidal thoughts scare the willies out of me. Not the usual dark and macrabre thoughts most people occasionally get, or the attention-seeking cuttery of others, but the real hard-core fascination and desire of your own non-existence is completely foreign to me.

Therefore, condolences to the friends and family of whoever. While it is far to easy to cynically mock the depression of others (I do this way too much), it isn't a particularly good idea, fundementally.

In a different level, i believe the existence, the option, of suicide is necessary.

It's tragic, sure. Those left behind are sad, left in mourning. And everybody goes on and on at how he or she was such a great person. Liars. They're the reason they wanted to die in the first place.

It's selfish. They don't take into account how others would react to their actions. Well, actually they do to a certain extent; They think "oh, the whole world is better off without me, so meh". And who knows, they may be right. Who are we to judge whether or not their death is bad? It's their death, let them decide.

Some people are going to argue passionately against what i've typed above. Probably they would say how there's always a second chance for every other second they would've lived. But they're aware of their chances. They've evaluated the worth of their life... and their death. Suicidal people aren't retarded assholes, disruptive and stupid kids at the back of the classroom. The world would be a much better place if that were so.

Just my darker thoughts on the issue...

Yeah I've known that feeling. Every time I stand on a platform or next to a road, or something like that I'm just curious as to what will happen.
haha i always always think things like that, ontop of tall buildings looking over the edge or down the side of a cliff aswell, i just start thinking what would happen and i get kinda stuck in an emotional loop... used to be a much stronger compulsion though.

As for that idiot saying things like "we never knew her" well obviously you didnt know her too well either as you didnt suspect she was suicidal. Since when do we need to personally know someone to comment on the tradegy of suicide anyways? and we can assume she was suicidal so we can atleast comment on the selfishness and stupidity of it.

Please review NCAP rules before posting in this thread.

This post was intended to talk about Suicide in general, and because the posts on Lil's suicide is closed in non-school, this thread no longer serves its initial purposes.

I will create a new thread on Lil's suicide (in this forum) for those of you who would like to discuss the matter further.

Thread closed.
