s plan for more and continued settlements in the West Bank

www.smh.com.au said:
THE US President, Barack Obama, has increased the pressure on Israel to seek a peaceful resolution to its conflict with the Palestinians, declaring that the status quo was "unsustainable".

His comments came as the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected a US demand that he freeze the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and as Jewish settlers went on a violent rampage, attacking Palestinian civilians and setting fire to Palestinian property near the West Bank city of Nablus.

Mr Obama was speaking ahead of his first visit to the Middle East since being sworn into office. He will address the Muslim world in an address from Cairo.

Mr Obama said the US needed to be more honest with Israel.

"I think there have been times where we are not as honest as we should be about the fact that the current direction, the current trajectory, in the region is profoundly negative, not only for Israeli interests but also US interests," he told US public radio.

"I believe that strategically, the status quo is unsustainable when it comes to Israel's security," the President said.

"Over time, in the absence of peace with Palestinians, Israel will continue to be threatened militarily and will have enormous problems on its borders."

The stance taken by Mr Obama towards Jewish settlements in the West Bank has shocked Israel, which has relied on the US as its strategic ally since the early 1950s.

On Monday the Israeli Prime Minister privately rejected President Obama's demand for a freeze on all settlement construction, telling a meeting of Israel's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, that the demand was unreasonable.

One element of a compromise being floated in the Israeli media yesterday was that, in return for allowing continued construction within West Bank settlements, Mr Netanyahu would have to publicly commit to a two-state solution - a position he has so far refused, in favour of measures to improve the economic life of Palestinians in the West Bank.

Mr Netanyahu's predecessor, Ehud Olmert, who was a strong public supporter of a two-state solution, authorised the building of 10,000 new housing units in West Bank settlements during his three years in office.

Despite Mr Netanyahu's apparent intransigence, there were signs he was trying to prepare his fledgling right-wing coalition for an Israeli compromise, telling members of his Likud faction yesterday that it might be better to concede something small than being forced to give up something much bigger.

Most of the parties in the ruling coalition, including Likud, are opposed to a settlement freeze.

The title of this thread is misleading.

People could be lead to believe Obama called for the destruction of Israel.

You'd think you'd want to encourage Israel to make this gesture towards peace, rather than instead using it as a new means to spread anti-Semitic rhetoric?

It is unfortunate, but some of these West Bank settlements have just become huge. If Israel had trouble removing the settlers from Gaza, this would be worse, 10 fold. The best they can hope to do without internally tearing the country to pieces is stop new settlements being created and to take down any existing smaller settlements.

wow that seed thing is actually quite amazing. how cant jew not die now..? LOL :p

anyway back on topic. Its horrendous the status of religious tolerance in the middle east (incredibly volatile). But the US has to start thinking, and come to the realization that in a sea of sharks, a fish has to outwit and outmaneuvre the sharks. It has been proven time and time again, that islamic countries surrounding Israel do not acknowledge its sovereignty as a nation although it was conceived and approved by all religions until the romans came and called it Palestine.

The US has to realise that at the current moment to both sides military presence is all that tempts the human fragility on both sides. Political sanctions will not work israel will just continue its trade with zionist countries, and jordan and lebanon will continue its trade with other muslim nations. The jewish settlements are constantly being bombarded and harrassed by islamic extremists, and you never hear about daily bomb blasts or rockets being fired over the border. This is why the state of david wages a quick and crushing war on those hostile nations. Lebanon is an example of that and the Gaza Strip is just a exemplary example. On the tension areas israeli citizens (not just jewish also muslim and christian) are in constant fear of attacks, retaliation is just something that comes naturally.

Look it is wrong for the US to think that this is Israelites fault, if you punched me i would beat the shit out of you (..unless your bigger then id call my friends and we'd all get you :p). I respect the US idealogy to police the world and promote world peace. But at its current state the middle east is far from reaching a peace agreement. How this recession is affecting them i would have no idea (no research done on this yet), but for the better or worse.

The Jews Are Complaining Again!

AMERICAN JEWISH organisations reacted with emotions ranging from disappointment to deep concern at Barack Obama's speech in Cairo, while conservative commentators accused the US President of selling out American interests.

But among American-Muslim groups it was seen as a groundbreaking acknowledgement of the importance of American-Muslims in US society and a break with the knee-jerk linking of terrorism with Islam.

Mr Obama did not break with the orthodoxy of US policy toward Israel in what he said - he repeated his demands that Israel accept a two-state solution and stop the expansion of settlements in the West Bank - but there were subtle emphases that alarmed elements of the Democrats' crucial voting bloc: American Jews.

The Anti-Defamation League said the speech missed an opportunity to put into historical context the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, namely that soon after Israel was created it was attacked by six of its Arab neighbours.

The Israel Project, a more conservative group, called for American Jews to write to their congressional representatives and the media stressing the issues that Mr Obama overlooked in his speech, such as stopping the threat of Iran and protecting Israel in other ways.

The conservative radio presenter Rush Limbaugh went further, describing the speech as "embarrassing" and saying Mr Obama "threw Israel over the cliff".

But Ahmed Rehab, director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Chicago, said the speech "acknowledged the genuine challenges and aspirations of Muslims".

Elsewhere, the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said the speech showed there was a "new and different American policy towards the Palestinian issue".

Even a Hamas official admitted a change in tone, but complained that Mr Obama had not mentioned the people killed in Israel's incursion into Gaza earlier this year.
An opportunity missed, US Jews complain

Netanyahu to lay out 'peace plans'

Half a million Israelis live in illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem [AFP]
Israel's prime minister has announced he will deliver a major policy speech laying out his plans for achieving peace with the Palestinians.
But Binyamin Netanyahu did not offer any details when he made the announcement on Sunday.
Netanyahu has been under pressure from Barack Obama, the US president, to stop West Bank settlement expansion and to endorse Palestinian statehood.
At the start of his weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Netanyahu said "it must be understood, we seek peace with the Palestinians and with the states of the Arab world while trying to reach maximum understanding with the United States and our friends abroad".
The prime minister has so far refused to agree to White House demands to halt all settlement expansion, without exception.
While Netanyahu has declared his commitment to peace before, he has avoided directly addressing how he plans to reach any agreement while remaining unwilling to give up control of most of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

In video
The body language of US-Israeli tensions More Videos... "I aspire to a stable peace based on the solid foundations of the security of the state of Israel and its citizens," he said at the cabinet meeting. The Palestinians demand that the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem be part of their future state and refuse to engage in peace talks until Israel agrees to freeze settlement construction and endorse a Palestinian state.
But Israel's settlement construction in the West Bank has been a major obstacle to peacemaking as it is seen by the international community as a way of controlling land claimed by the Palestinians.
Half a million Jews currently live in settlement blocks in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Obama has repeatedly called for an end to settlement expansion, in part to improve US relations with the Muslim world, which had been damaged by the policies of his predecessor, George Bush.
Ending settlements
Senior Israeli officials accuse Obama of not respecting an understanding Israel had with the Bush administration that included an exception for so-called "natural growth" of families already living in settlements.
But Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, told ABC news in an interview on Sunday that there was no official record of any such agreement.
"That was never made a part of the official record of the negotiations, as it was passed on to our administration," she said. "No one in the Bush administration said to anyone that we can find in our administration."
While Obama's emphasis on Israel ending settlement expansion is not a departure from US policy in the past, his direct and repeated calls in high-profile public appearances, echoed by Joe Biden, his vice-president, have put many in Israel on edge.
Under the Bush administration, Israel had enjoyed near unwavering support from Washington on many contentious issues, including settlement expansion.
But in speeches in Egypt and Europe this past week, Obama continued to press for a settlement freeze and for the pursuit of a two-state solution.
Obama said that Washington "does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements" in his speech in Egypt.
But Netanyahu's right-wing coalition is committed to Israel's settlements and any shift on that position risks the collapse of the coalition.
Obama plans to dispatch George Mitchell, his envoy to the Middle East, to the region this week in an attempt to persuade Israelis and Palestinians to resume talks.
Mitchell has long advocated the need for a settlement freeze as mandatory for any tangible progress on peacemaking.
Jerusalem must remain off the tables for Israel to commit to anything and it must be remain on the tables for the Palestinians to be involved.

The Arabs of Palestine must forgo some liberty? What is this liberty that you speak of. Israel has stolen a lot from the Arabs over the years - they have certainly conceded their fair share.
