Status quo in Israel is unsustainable: Obamawww.smh.com.au said:THE US President, Barack Obama, has increased the pressure on Israel to seek a peaceful resolution to its conflict with the Palestinians, declaring that the status quo was "unsustainable".
His comments came as the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected a US demand that he freeze the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and as Jewish settlers went on a violent rampage, attacking Palestinian civilians and setting fire to Palestinian property near the West Bank city of Nablus.
Mr Obama was speaking ahead of his first visit to the Middle East since being sworn into office. He will address the Muslim world in an address from Cairo.
Mr Obama said the US needed to be more honest with Israel.
"I think there have been times where we are not as honest as we should be about the fact that the current direction, the current trajectory, in the region is profoundly negative, not only for Israeli interests but also US interests," he told US public radio.
"I believe that strategically, the status quo is unsustainable when it comes to Israel's security," the President said.
"Over time, in the absence of peace with Palestinians, Israel will continue to be threatened militarily and will have enormous problems on its borders."
The stance taken by Mr Obama towards Jewish settlements in the West Bank has shocked Israel, which has relied on the US as its strategic ally since the early 1950s.
On Monday the Israeli Prime Minister privately rejected President Obama's demand for a freeze on all settlement construction, telling a meeting of Israel's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, that the demand was unreasonable.
One element of a compromise being floated in the Israeli media yesterday was that, in return for allowing continued construction within West Bank settlements, Mr Netanyahu would have to publicly commit to a two-state solution - a position he has so far refused, in favour of measures to improve the economic life of Palestinians in the West Bank.
Mr Netanyahu's predecessor, Ehud Olmert, who was a strong public supporter of a two-state solution, authorised the building of 10,000 new housing units in West Bank settlements during his three years in office.
Despite Mr Netanyahu's apparent intransigence, there were signs he was trying to prepare his fledgling right-wing coalition for an Israeli compromise, telling members of his Likud faction yesterday that it might be better to concede something small than being forced to give up something much bigger.
Most of the parties in the ruling coalition, including Likud, are opposed to a settlement freeze.
