Man this whole whaling issue is fucking bullshit.

Japanese eat fish because they don't have the grazing land to farm cattle and sheep so white bourgeois liberals pick on them because they have yellow skin.

If these same people tried to stop a Texan eating his rump steak they'd get their asses shot.
Hole in your argument: whales are not fish

Much of the hunting in the southern ocean is in Australian territorial waters, Japan is signatory to international agreements recognizing Australian sovereignty in these areas, but the government doesn't persue it for whatever reason. Australian govment would have every right legally to fuck them off with guns.

Is my recollection of the events of ENVS2010.

Which is separate from the issue of if we should care.

"In terms of sustainability, you can't be sure that the Japanese whaling is entirely unsustainable," Professor Flannery told The Daily Telegraph. "It's hard to imagine that the whaling would lead to a new decline in population."

Well, as I read the situation, Japan recognises that we look after our Antarctic waters, but not that they count as our territory to be defended. Which is why they indicated that if we were to defend those waters with guns, they would regard it as an unprovoked act of war.

It's more about politics and economies than shooting, dude.

We export a lot of stuff to Japan, including a shit load of fresh food, not to mention mineral resources. What happens if they did to us what the US did to Cuba?

That's not gonna happen.

Everyone's favorite bogeyman nowadays is China.

Japan, Australia, New Zealand and India have a secret pact to contain China.

I don't think Japan has that much leverage (happy to be convinced by some numbers though). Sure, it might sting if we put our foot down, but we have a lot of stuff that a lot of the world needs. Whether the sting is worth the whales, well ... maybe it's too late for me to get into that.

Rudd did a good thing.

Australia 'seriously' considering whaling challenge

dec 10, 2009

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An international legal challenge to Japan's yearly whale hunt near Antarctica is being seriously considered by Australia, with the controversial cull set to begin in weeks, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Friday.

"We, if we cannot resolve this matter diplomatically, will take international legal action. I'm serious about it, I would prefer to deal with it diplomatically, but if we cannot get there, that's the alternative course of action," Rudd said.

"A country like Japan is quite law-abiding. I doubt very much whether a country like Japan would risk ignoring a binding ruling by a leading international court," Australian international law expert Don Rothwell told Reuters.

Some legal experts believe the Japanese cull is in breach of several international laws and treaties, including the Antarctic Treaty System and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Eating whale in Japan is socially frowned upon. Ergo, it's not as expensive as everyone thinks. And if you like an oily beef-tuna combo, you can stomache it.

The majority of the carcass goes to waste.

I give a shit because it minutely affects my holiday. Quite frankly could not be fucked caring about dying whale more than I care about 3rd world countries riddled with kids with AIDS.

Sure we have a lot of stuff the world needs, but most countries that need it don't have the coin to buy it, or if they do and don't buy it from us, they'll buy it dirt cheap from dirt poor countries. Japan doesn't have to shop from us.

Rudd did a good thing.
It's one of his election promises that I simultaneously hopes he fulfills while knowing 100% he won't/can't. :(

The point is the Australian government hasn't legally challenged Japanese whaling in an international court, a case which they would likely win.

Depends on the part of Japan and who you talk to, I guess. Whale meat is still very acceptable to the older generations, and in coastal towns that still practice dolphin-drive hunting.

You're right about it not being expensive, though. It's so cheap that the government provides it (and dolphin meat) for school lunches - pity about the mercury.
