To be honest i do quite a few "drop-kick" subjects.. Bludged through year 11 and dropped to standard Eng and General Maths... I'm just wondering if it's still possible to get 90-85 Atar with these subjects, if so which subjects do I need the marks in to boost my Atar?

12-units (These are the results i've received for my FIRST test)
General Maths 70%
Standard English n/a
Physics 85%
Biology 88%
Legal Studies 95%
Economics 90%

I've been surfing this forum quite alot and found people scoring ~90 Atar with subjects like Maths Ext 1 , Adv Eng, Eng Ext 1 , History Ext 1.... I am quite worried about my General Maths and Standard English as my subject selections...

Please share your experience/knowledge and inspire me..

I'm sorry but I highly doubt you will get inspired, all I can really say is do your best but dont expect to be getting into combined law or even medical radiation science (radiography) anytime soon.....

Now I don't know how smart you are, only you know that - so I'll make two very broad assumptions here, each hypothesis tested.

1. You are the average P50 student, this means the scaled marks I say below is for P50, state average, in all your subjects.

GenMath 20.9 41.8/100
StdEng 17.6 35.2/100 (2)
Phy 31.8 63.6/100 (2)
Bio 27.7 55.4/100 (2)
Legal 26.2 52.4/100 (2)
Econ 32.5 65.0/100 (2)
Agg: 271.6/500
ATAR: 70.15

2. You are better than that and are a P75 student, or in the top 25% of the state. Exactly in the top 25%.

GenMath 29.0 58.0/100
StdEng 23.4 46.8/100 (2)
Phy 38.0 76.0/100 (2)
Bio 34.3 68.6/100 (2)
Legal 33.8 67.6/100 (2)
Econ 38.4 76.8/100 (2)
Agg: 335.8/500
ATAR: 84.15

So even if you are in the top 25th percentile in the STATE for your subjects, all of them, you fall short at 84.15 ATAR. So you can do it, just don't bet on it unless you are like miracle whiz kid - who should be doing Math and English Advanced. Still, cases are heard of where these things have happened, so you have already chosen your path - you can't change the subject now.

I wish you the best of luck.

In my calculations, yes, they will not count Gen Maths, due to the compulsory-ness of English:

GenMath 20.9 41.8/100
StdEng 17.6 35.2/100 (2)
Phy 31.8 63.6/100 (2)
Bio 27.7 55.4/100 (2)
Legal 26.2 52.4/100 (2)
Econ 32.5 65.0/100 (2)
Agg: 271.6/500
ATAR: 70.15

Those numbers show the number of units counted. The only way to counter-act this is of course, a high Gen Math mark or a StdEng mark higher than the Gen Math one.

*Sigh... Well i am top 10 in all my subjects... I don't know about English, haven't received my marks yet... So your saying i need to beat ~85% of the state with my subjects to achieve an atar ~90?( I think it MAY be possible for me...) I am hoping to get into B commerce @ Macquaire, i heard Macquarie is well known for commerce related subjects and the cut-off is only ~85?

I know this girl who scored 85 Atar with subjects like Std Eng, Bio, Gen Maths, Hospitality and Business. She scored around band 5 for Gen maths and rank 20/40 for Business, so i thought that MAYBE i can still achieve an Atar that just touches the 90 mark...

Another Question... I heard that you can "transfer" to other Unis? What does that mean? So i can go do a random course in a random uni then go transfer into UNSW and do B of Commerce?

If you get a high enough percentage and mark, you can get 90 ATAR. However you have to get a P85 or maybe even a P90. Although I can check P90 for you:

GenMath 34.8 69.6/100
StdEng 28.7 57.4/100 (2)
Phy 42.1 84.2/100 (2)
Bio 38.9 77.8/100 (2)
Legal 39.3 78.6/100 (2)
Econ 42.4 84.8/100 (2)
Agg: 382.8/500
ATAR: 92.25

So yes, P90 in all your subjects guarantees a 90 ATAR. Now unless you are ranked 1 in all your classes, I would take the P75 estimate if you think you are really good - because in your school, you really don't know how good you are compared to the state, unless you are in Ruse or a selective school student.

I don't know about uni's however.

Also, you cannot use your marks from school to determine how good you are. Your school may be giving you ridiculously easy tests and that's why you score so highly, and then you go to the HSC and get 40% - then your HSC mark will be 40 even if you are ranked first in the class and that's the highest score in your cohort.

Your ability to transfer depends on a mixture of your ATAR and how well you do in first year uni. I think the requirements change depending on what course and what uni you want to go to. So essentially yes, you can do a random course in a random uni and if you do well enough, you can get accepted into B Commerce @ UNSW. But it's recommended that you do a course that's the same/similar or else you might have to add an extra year to your studies. Also, UNSW has a preferrential system for internal transfers so I'd say you're better off choosing a course in UNSW if you intend on transferring into a course there. At least, that's my back up plan if I don't get into the course I want.

You can definitely if you work really hard. My girlfriend scored a 99.25 atar with general maths, legal studies, pdhpe, sor1.

Course you can!! Dw, as long as you smash every assessment/exams 90+ will arrive in due time
Unless of course your school gives ridiculously easy exams that do not prepare the students for the HSC... but those are in a minority.

Callum - we need to know what English she did.
Frozen - Ohh shucks, don't mention it =P
