Answer would be either that the climax and end of the Cultural Revolution distracted everyone from the economy, or Mao's death meant that the lowly government officials actually started reporting production figures that weren't from Narnia, which would have resulted in a theoretical recession.

I believe it could've one of two reasons. Firstly being Mao's death which also resulted in the gang of four's dismantle. Also there was a rather big earthquake in Tangshan (around 700,000 people died approx. this was given by the chinese government) So you could say there was a lack of labour, resources etc High demand Low supply. The chinese even called it the "year of curse"
