I have been feeling this way recently. I find it concerning that both parties seem to have become much more socially conservative with the directions they are heading. I find things like the idea of censored internet in a free country frightening/disgusting and both party's stances on things like gay marriage, the treatment of asylum seekers and the ongoing "tough" stances on drugs seem so backward to me.

This has left me in the position of not wanting to vote for either party, regardless of how I feel about the economic policy. Do you feel the same way, or is economic policy alone enough to give you satisfaction in choosing between the two?

Sad but true, liberals are too far right for a former liberal prime minister, and labor is effectively centrist.

Hoping the upswing in the greens vote forces the labor party to reconnect with the progressive left.

Yeah I feel the same way.

Both parties are just pandering to old people who like zero tolerance on everything. Which I suppose makes sense in a country with an ageing population but it leaves me feeling as though I really wouldn't be happy to see either party in power.

The greens? I dunno.

Yeah I realise the unease with the greens. I think that if they were to appeal to the broader progressive demographic, then there is hope

But they already do. How much of what you fear about them is actually from another time in politics when they were a fringe 3rd party?

Yeah, the parties seem to lack any solidly beneficial (to the freedom of the populace) social policy for their next term(s). Economic policy doesn't make up for it, imo.

If I could vote, I'd be voting Greens, tbh.

When did I say that?

There was a poll about: "Should cigarettes be banned?" and I voted no because they pay for their own medical treatments and then some. Also, I don't really care as no one is pretty much allowed to smoke indoors anyway.

I'm sorry I dont understand what you mean by "freedom of the populace"

Do you mean a liberal social policy?
i.e. gay marriage and what not?

Or broader liberalism.
i.e. freedom of association, issue of censorship?

Both, friend.

I would like my country and myself to be able to access what we/I choose to be appropriate for ourselves on the internet, not what some Jesus person thinks is right. The same goes for homosexual rights, as the politicians didn't even allow a referendum to take place because they're so bigoted and opposed to it. Their opinions on social issues are completely backward and downright retarded.
