So apparently you do advanced subjects and an extra honors year. Is it worth the extra year or is it better to get into the workforce and start earning? (I'm planning to major in Actuarial btw) - at UNSW.

Thanks

At what university is this?

If it's at UNSW, you do SCIF1121 which gets you to meet other people doing your course - very helpful in that respect. And you are required to take the Higher subjects, so Higher Maths 1A, Higher Maths 1B, etc.

In normal Science, you don't do SCIF - and you have the option to take Higher courses. So moral of the story is, if you like maths/are good at maths, take the Adv. Maths course if you can.

Yep, was referring to UNSW, but what is SCIF1121?

Bludge course where you learn to be a good scientist. It's good because you meet people in your degree.

And yes, the automatic honours is very good because you only need 70 WAM to get into it - while if you do normal B Science you need like 80 or something. And honours is great for job prospects apparently...

Is it possible to change into just normal maths after a few years into the degree? Would the honors really be worth a whole first year's salary?

you should be able to get into honours in science degree with 70 WAM too.
theres no difference except if u do adv. maths u have to do SCIF.
and majors are different too i guess.

only do it if ur enjoying maths, if its worth a year of salary, maybe?
it also leads onto postgrad maths if u want (i.e. phd)

if you don't want to do honours, you're probably better off with a normal science degree. you can take EXACTLY the same courses as adv maths. the only difference is the name of your degree and major, honours isn't compulsory, and you don't have to do SCIF.

but scif is gr8

And I think you can bail on honours if you want. It's just that it's automatic as part of the degree. I could be wrong, so probably ask...

ok, guess I'll atleast enter and then decide later on if an extra honors just for maths is worth the time..

I read around and it says that if you don't want to do Honours in the Adv Maths degree, you have to transfer to B Science - i.e. normal Science.

Fair enough, from what I heard you still get the exemptions from the actuarial exams anyway, so its all good :)
