question 1- A?
question 2- B?

i was deciding between D and B for question 4....
3. A
4. D
Question 1 - A
Question 2 - B.

^Same, I was trying to pick between D and B.
Remember it is no so important what your answer is but how you achieved that answer and the reasoning behind it.

Question 3- A?
Because: bo=man, lail=heavy, luk=package, jo= pretty. Therefore bo would have to be in the answer because the word 'man' is needed in the phrase, that eliminates (C) and (D). Since luk means package and we're looking for 'pretty' that eliminates (B); also, an adjective is needed -'pretty'- and package is a noun. In B package comes second and the noun appears to come first. 'Bo' - man- is the noun and comes at the beginning of the phrase in (A) . ...
You asked for reasons in the the previous thread that's why I explained my answer, otherwise I wouldn't explain :) Hope it's right :L
Very good, your reasoning is spot on. Try writing as if you were in the exam. Would you write the full explanation or maybe something like "luk + eir + lail = heavy little package, bo + lail = heavy man therefore lail = heavy". For most questions I try and work out the answer directly then, if that doesn't work then I do by proving other answers wrong. If you can do both at the same time that will greatly help you.

actually, 4. B
Did you change because you rethought your reason or you saw other people posting?

Question 4, (D). The reason I have is because of the evident negativity present in her speech which sorta of identifies her character as desperate.

Josephine: Doctor, I can't. I just can't cope with it. You can't imagine how much pain I went through when my first child was born. I can't take such pain again. It'll kill me. Please have me anaesthetised when I go into labour. Please.

The highlighted , especially the 'please' at the end makes her explanation/request imploratory, and therefore desperate.
Very good, you've identified the general feeling by the woman regarding her baby. The only criticism I could have is that I don't know if you ruled out the other options. You may be confident in your choice but then again, who isn't? It is good to be sure, time permitting.

A and D...the constant pleading and repetition suggests that she is desperate
Good but what if the doctor insisted that she doesn't take anesthetic? How do you think that would change the answer?

but despite being desperate, she is thinking of just HERSELF not the baby. Not to mention its the obstericians job to ensure that the baby is delivered at the best possible outcome. But she can't see that, she is only thinking of the pain she will be through....thats why I thought B would be the best suited answer

but yet again I dont know :/
Good answer but remember, the UMAT is such that they do not assume you know what an Obstetrician is (believe or not some medical applicants don't). The questions sometimes use your prior knowledge against you, e.g. you might incorrectly assume that a doctor has prescribed a certain drug such as salbutamol for asthma. Hence, try not bring outside knowledge/personal experience into your answers.

3. A
Luk eir lail = heavy little package
bo lail = heavy man
luk jo = pretty package.
by equating, we see that these two phrases are he only ones with 'heavy' in them, therefore, the word in the other language, must be used twice. In this case, the only word use twice as 'heavy' was is 'lail'. Therefore heavy = lail.
By elimination, this must mean bo = man, since 'lail' already means heavy.

heavy = lail
man = bo

By equating again, the word 'package' is also used in two phrases: 'luk eir lail' and 'luk jo'. The only two words used twice here is 'luk'. Therefore luk = package. Although it is unnecessary to know, 'jo' must therefore mean 'pretty' by elimination.

package = luk
pretty = jo

By further elimination, and the meaning of the words we just deduced the meaning of, the word meaning 'little' can also be found.

'Luk eir lail' is the only phrase used containing the sentence 'heavy little package'. But, we already know the translation of the words heavy (lail) and package (luk). Therefore little = eir.

little = eir

Therefore, 'little man' is translated to 'eir (little) bo (man)'.

But, as can be seen in the first given phrase, the translated sentence does not have to necesarily be in the same order in terms of their words. (heavy and package have been rotated). Therefore 'bo eir' is appropriate to the options given.

Therefore, 3 is A.

For four i got D :p

I believe the answer is not B because it is a perfectly rational choice to not want to practically die during childbirth, just maybe a selfish one? she sees there being no point in both of them dying during the childbirth progress and who rather the chances of her childs life be tampered slightly, then her complete convincement in the fact that she (and her child) will die in the process without it.
A very comprehensive answer and I'm glad that you went to the effort to write such a good answer. The only advice I can give is to make it nice and succinct. This will help with the HSC aswell.

3 = A [self explanatory]

4 = C

I do not think that Josephine is irrational (B). Yes, anaesthetic may harm her baby and she has been informed prior to labour. Therefore she is not making a decision at the spur of the moment. I was tossing between C and D but I'm not very sure. I expected most people to choose D but since my initial reaction was C , I'll just go with it. It is true that the pain isn't going to kill her, however, it must have been such an extremely traumatising situation to have to react that way. Yes, she is desperate, but moreover she is concerned for her own state of mind/health

I dont know. :/
Look at the words that she has chosen, this is what the UMAT is about. Not entirely what she is trying to convey but HOW she is presenting it. Look for any repetitions.

If she was concerned, I think she would also consider the life of the baby as well as hers. But if she's irrational, it means that she isn't making a logical or reasonable choice, she is only worried about HERSELF not about the baby. Although imo, it's really close between B and D.
How is it irrational when the patient gives specific reasons and causes for her state of mind, imo it's d
I would appreciate peer discussions on this, as writing replies to you guys is quite time consuming. You are right Aysce, it is a decision between b and d but remember to look at the immediate emotion of the woman.

If it is an immediate emotion then it would be D.

4. D, because it is quite rational to not wish to undergo severe pain. She said she had another child, she is aware of the pain involved and has made (a bad) but informed decision, also the repition of the word "Please" shows despiration as she pleads for help.

question 3: the answer is A.

all you have to do is compare the 3 words and find the commmon words in both languages to find whhat each word means.

question 4: i think the answer is either again B or D

but i think the answer is D desperate because the language used makes her seem like she absolutely needs the a anaesthetic or fears the pain and possible consequences that may occur

Do you know 'Spelling' when you see it?
^ lol.

... @ Sainteced- I wish I could summarise Q4 like you did, so succinct and logical. I struggle with this skill all the time; I barely ever finish my exams because I tend to explain my answers in too much detail or struggle to construct an answer that addresses the question appropriately :'(
Should've seen my SC science exam...the 'short' answers were tripple lined. No doubt they had fun reading it.
Any tips on how to be as succinct and logical in answering questions??

3-A (many people have explained it)
4-D
Like someone said the woman constantly repeats words like can't and need. Option A is too weak emotionally to be counted (she will be in severe pain). For B she doesn't seem irrational because she simply wants to save herself and avoid pain. For C she is concerned but her dialogue is beyond that as she seems panicky. Someone who is concerned would do so in a calm manner. Hence option D

On another note, I have to say sainteced you are a legend for creating this thread, repping you.

3. A
4. D. its not B (irrational) because she is going off previous experience rather this being her first time.

3.

luk eir lail = heavy little package and bo lail = heavy man. Hence we know that lail = heavy.
Luk jo = pretty package so we can deduce that luk = package and hence eir = little. Therefore little package is eir bo or bo eir. Hence the answer is A.

4.

There is a tone of desperation in Josephine's comments (option D). Her use of repetition ('I can't. I just can't-', 'Please have me anaesthetised - please.') is an indication of this. She is pleading with the doctor; she is not annoyed with him / her (option A). She gives reasons for her decision and is not irrational (option B), although exaggeration may come through in her comments. She is displaying much more than mere concern (option C).

New Questions

Question 5

Bob and Cindy are each older than both Diane and Ellen.

If the statement above is true, then which of the following additional statements ensures the truth of the conclusion 'Allen is older than Ellen'?

a) Allen is younger than Bob

b) Cindy is older than Bob

c) Allen is older than Diane

d) Allen is older than Cindy

Question 6

Sometimes I think I'm lucky to be alive. I can't help enjoying the really simple things because all the time I'm telling myself that I could be dead instead. My friend Paul was driving me home from university; it was a long drive. We were travelling at about 120 and suddenly I noticed that we were beginning to creep off the road. I couldn't drive - my dad had always driven me nearly everywhere - and the idea that cars weren't on rails somehow suddenly struck me as unbelievable. At that point Paul woke up but he over-corrected and we hit the side. I remember thinking 'oh shit' and having this mental image of steps up to heaven and I think I remember thinking this is really unoriginal.

The author's tone in this passage could best be described as?

a) Saddened

b) Light-hearted

c) Nostalgic

d) Angered

Q5. D. If Bob and Cindy are both older then Diane and Ellen, then for Allen to be older the Ellen, he must be older then either Bob or Cindy. And given (D) is the only answer which satisfies this requirement, i say (D).

Q6. B. I canceled out c and d cause i he is neither angered nor nostalgic. I think it B because of the second sentence "I can't help enjoying the really simple things because all the time I'm telling myself that I could be dead instead". It may not necessarily say he is carefree but it does say how much he appreciates being alive and how much he enjoys even the simple things, which is more light-hearted than anything else there.

agreed - biggest supporting case for 6 being B, in my belief, is the last sentence: I remember thinking 'oh shit' and having this mental image of steps up to heaven and I think I remember thinking this is really unoriginal.

Reasoning for 5:

It may be interesting to note that the first letter of each name are actually the first consecutive 5 letters of the alphabet - this can be used for simplicity.

We are given the information (Bob and Cindy are each older than both Diane and Ellen):

B C ^
D E | older

When given A is older then E, the possibilities become:
A A
B C
A A
D E
This ensures all the possibilities of this statement are covered, now for the elimination process.

Now, for the process of elimination.
(a) Allen is younger than Bob (A is below B)
This is true, but not for all case (A is above B in two cases i.e. Allen is older then Bob)

(b) Cindy is older than Bob (C is above B)
This is not true, as no information indicates this so.
(d) Allen is older than Cindy (A above C)
not necessarily (A is below C in one case)

(c) Allen is older than Diane
In all cases this is true (A is above D in all cases)

Therefore the answer is C.
(Though i am more than sure that there are flaws in this working out)

Doing Q6 first, I have to think about Q5 more...
I believe the answer is (B) -light-hearted.
Initially we get the sense of a reminicense, 'My friend Paul was driving....', however a crash is not a happy memory or one that would want to be relived, i.e. something to be nostalgic about. Not (C).
No sense of anger present (D).
Can't see any sadness present either. Because he/she ends in '... I remember thinking this was unoriginal' rather than noting the affects the event had on him, they chose this ^; leads me to think it's (B).

i would have to say question 5 is D becaue is makes ALLEN older then CINDY and BOB who are older then DIANE and ELLEN. A>C/B>DE

For question 6 the answer has to be B light hearted.A (angered) would be wrong because the language used does not refer to her /him being angry. the feeling is alo not nogalitic becaue he/she does not miss the event that occured. it also isnt sadened as there is no evidence for saddness
