because the electromagnet is much smaller (hence lighter) than the armature coils so less energy is required to create the same rate of change in flux through the armature coils. i.e. it is more energy efficient that way.

I highly recommend this guy. Ani's breadth of knowledge in both physics and chemistry is just phenomenal. He really does know how to drastically improve your results, seeing what he's achieved himself. Besides, he's extremely good looking as well.
