Basically the only thing you can do to make your notes shorter is to use smaller sentences. There's no way of trying to guess what's 'most likely' to be asked about and then skimp on other sections. Modern History's a bit like that :(

Trials count as part of your school assessment. So the 50/50 ratio of assessment/exam still applies, but (if you're right) 60% of that 50% comes from in-school assessment tasks and 40% comes from trials.

I wouldn't advise preparing set essays for Modern History, since the questions can be so narrow (especially for WW1). The best you can do is a thorough knowledge of the dot points. I suggest ripping them out of the syllabus and making summaries from them.
