    Pure Vs Applied Mathematics

G.H Hardy said The distinction between pure and applied mathematics is simply that applied mathematics seeks to express physical truth in a mathematical framework, whereas pure mathematics expressed truths that are independent of the physical world. I agree totally, pure mathematics generally...

    triangle inequality (complex number)

Didn't you just prove the triangle inequality using the triangle inequality?

    YEAR 11 TRIGONOMETRY EXAM

You could but it would be annoying, much easier to do it the other way. Do some 3-d trig stuff and look at past papers.

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Did you sketch the graph? That sometimes gives the answer away especially in complex number questions. However I don't think there is a quicker algebraic method but I could be wrong.

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Yes, infinite geometric series. I think I am just confusing myself. This is from the unsw school mathematics comp, it is interesting and I would consider it harder 3 unit.

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Right, so I did it again and I still get a different answer. Your method is definitely shorter as I am using infinite series and a lot more algebra.

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon What if the radius isn't one? When I did the question, I got a similar answer but I used a variable r and couldn't simplify past a point, I am sure I did something wrong but when I got a similar looking anwser.</oap>

    Happy Birthday to Math Man

Is the question based on something that someone who had only done 4 unit for a term would be able to do?

    Discriminant.

    Thank you kind sir!

    Discriminant.

Okay, as stupid as it sounds. I am finding the Pi notation absolutely mind destroying, can you give a simple example and I will probably be able to figure it out.

    Question 8

Very specifically, I remember an absolutely fantastic explanation of the formula or the area of a circle. It is here. I don't think that this will really benefit anyone in here but I think that the approach taken would benefit many people in their approach of any Q8. The website also has many...

I like maths, will I enjoy actuarial studies?

I did a geography assignment on population growth in year 10, it was the most interesting thing we ever did in geography. I love number theory and have spent innumerable days trying to, in vain, solve the collatz conjecture (Because I am so naive). Quantative risk, planning and optimization also...

Do mathematics 2 unit tests count?

Oh alright, it is just kinda annoying. I was under the impression that I got 100 for 2 Unit if I was doing 4 Unit. That is annoying as I got 100 in all my 2 unit exams.

Do mathematics 2 unit tests count?

So I get nothing for completing the 2 unit maths course? Even though if I had done two unit and not extension 2 I would have blitzed it? That doesn't seem very fair.

    Help with Polynomials

I know, I'm scraping the barrel for answers here. I think that it's probably just an error in the textbook and it doesn't matter as the answer is still the same.

    Help with Polynomials

    Exactly, its only semantics.
