Yeah I agree Modern is a great subject. I do also think that there's a bit too much dates and content (especially for WW1 !!) - Modern should be more about the analysis of history rather than the recounting of History. Too bad we're the last year to go thru the currently used "long" modern...

We've been using Bill Pender - Cambridge I also use fitzy as a supplement though.

Maybe that's because part of English is about articulation of ideas. By the same token, if there was a "truly original" idea articulated by a particular candidate, backed by evidence and sophistication, he/she would get the top marks. Besides.. how many "new ideas" can you come up with? I...

I'm not saying the course is perfect, but I don't believe it explicitly states that the media is bad. Also, I think to get the top bands, you do have to be a pretty top writer or show a bit of conceptual creativity (preferably both :D). Accepting the syllabus definitions will get you so far...

Attacking something is quite different to identifying and questioning. In any essay, you are free to make a "value judgement" implicitly or within the thesis. If you're able to make the point that "it doesn't matter" in a sophisticated manner, I don't see how you're excluded from the top band.

In that time you can plan out the whole structure of your essays in your head.

That's a good point. If people don't understand what is discussed in a thread, they don't have to take their frustrations out on those who are discussing it. The choice is there - either join the discussion properly or ignore it.
