    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Thanks for that :). How would you do this question: I could do it but the second part took me a bit of time whilst in the answers they just wrote it down with no working (past school paper). Am I missing something ridiculously simple?

Re: 2012 HSC MX1 Marathon To be honest I've got no idea what the question means. What is a horizontal triangle and a vertical hexagon? Is the question asking to prove that angle CPA is tan root3/5 or the other angle (CP to the left of P -> there's no letter there.) If you can explain those...

    Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon $a) z^4&=-1 $ $ &=cis(\pi +2k\pi) $ $ &=cis(\pi/4), cis(3\pi/4), cis(-\pi/4), cis(-3\pi/4) $ I don't know how to plot them on here but the third part: c) All diagonals are equal length (all have modulus 1). They are perpendicular...

Re: 2012 HSC MX1 Marathon Angle sum of pentagon is 3pi. Let the smallest angle be a. Therefore the angles are: a,a+d,a+2d,a+3d,a+4d where d is the common difference. 5a+10d=3pi (1) But a+4d=2a (largest angle twice smallest) Therefore 4d=a Sub into (1): 30d=3pi d=pi/10 a=2pi/5 Therefore the...

    Multiples of 90

Firstly, you know that you measure any angle from the x axis. Therefore cos(180-x) means x degrees in an clockwise direction from the x axis at 180 degrees. This is the same 'base' angle as x degrees. But cos is negative in the second quadrant. Therefore cos(180-x)=-cosx. Does that make sense?

    Maths Problems

Do you know the unit circle (ASTC)? I can't draw it but I'll show you the working for a few of them: 1. cos(-30) is in the fourth quadrant (+) and has a 'base' angle of 30 degrees. cos is positive in the first and fourth quadrants. Therefore cos(-30)=cos30 or cos330. 3...

Study tips for the following subjects

For maths, do as many papers as you can to get used to style etc. For example, after you finish a particular topic, get a past paper by topic book (get it from your library if you don't own one) and do them. As you cover more of the course, you can do trial papers just skipping the topics you...

    Improve handwriting speed

Hey guys, Do any of you know any methods to improve handwriting speed without making the quality worse? Is it just practice or have any of the more 'exotic' methods (battery on pen etc) actually worked? If it helps, I can probably write about 1600 words in an hour but ideally I want to do...

    Help on unit circle

Either do I. Why would you even you use the unit circle if you had a value for tan34. Why not just use cotx=1/tanx in your calculator?

Yep, discuss always means both sides.

    Discriminant.

Sigma notation refers to addition, the pi refers to multiplication. For example (I don't know how to make this neat) but if you had n=1 on the bottom of the pit, n=8 on the top and n^2 on the side, it means (1^2)x(2^2)x(3^2)x...x(8^2). Does that make sense?

Could I still obtain a high ATAR of 97+?

Also, i'm assuming that the first set of assessments is only lightly weighted compared to everything else. At my school, our first 3U test (haven't done a 4U test yet) was only 10% so even if you got 60%, you'd only be a max of 4% behind the top guy. Just do your best in your upcoming...

    Prelim Help!

For our school (Sydney Tech) our final prelim exam was as follows: Section 1: Short Answer (10 marks) - was on a picture, a poem and a prose extract Section 2: Creative Writing on journeys (10 marks) - Had to pick between three stimuli. The one that I wrote, from memory was "I looked in the...

    Drawing derivative function.

I'll try to explain the one with the aymptote- Looking at the left hand side: 1. There is a maximum (stationary value) at around x=1 (just guessing as there is no scale). Here the derivative function is zero. 2. On the left hand side of this point, the curve is approaching the asymptote of what...
